*Real next goal: Put on more muscle and keep up the healthy diet.

Nice work. You’re an inspiration to me – I feel like I need to reduce my body fat percentage a bit, just to be on the safe side for long term health. Time to get to it!
Kris Preusker says
Very nice! I like how you included the drum kit both times for scale. XD
Carl Viñas says
Have I mentioned that Jen #2 looks stunning?
Nominatissima says
First of all: Congratulations! Secondly: Can I ask about the lei in photo #1? I’m dying of curiosity as to why it’s there.
Jen says
Ahahahaa, totally unintentional nerdiness.
BunyipAndler says
Woah, your resolution’s gotten WAY nicer.Congrats! :D

:) Lookin’ good!
Egoistpaul says
Wow. It was nice. I wonder if you’ve measured your hip-to-waist ratio. I bet it has improved a lot. :)I’m guessing after two losing games you finally score another point. Water retention is a bitch, isn’t it? :-)
Screamer77 says
you look amazing!!!!!!
Kris says
Good job. You’re lucky. I started using the iPhone app “Lose It!” around the time you started this. I set it for losing 1.5 lbs a week and it put me on a 1300 cal/day diet that I stuck with for 4 weeks. When my weight didn’t change I set it to 2 lbs a week putting me on a 1100 cal/day diet. I stuck to that for another 4 more weeks (had to exercise a lot more because 1100 calories is real hard to do). No weight change at all. I just stopped using the app and stopped keeping track of calories. My weight still hasn’t changed but it’s nice to not keep track of everything. Do you keep track of your calories?
Jen says
Yeah, I use LoseIt…Honestly that’s the one thing I’ve been doing to lose weight. Sorry it didn’t work for you :
Ann Nguyen says
Wooo.. you go girl!
Michigancolt says
Congrats!! Looking great!!
Anna Jobsis says
You are looking so much healthier in pix number 2. Congrats. I’ll bet you have more energy these days, too. My start weight was the same as yours, and I remember I had *no* energy before I lost the 70lbs. :/
Kris says
Wow, really? You’re fortunate then. I’m willing to bet that you’ll hit a plateau soon where you won’t be able to lose weight without some gym time. But at that point you probably won’t really “need” to lose any more weight. I honestly think the only reason I saw no weight loss is because I used to lift weights all the time. I went from being in the military, lifting weights 5-6 times a week to being in college, lifting beers 2-3 times a week :P But now that I’m back in the gym the muscle mass gain makes my weight higher.
SpitefulFox says
Congrats! :D
Big Merlot says
Go Jen..you got stood up?
Wildy says
You look really nice in that dress, but I must admit that I prefer the profile picture far more.
Epizephyrii says
Yeoza! I already thought this before, but I’m even more baffled now when you mention things like in your next post like getting rejected. Smart, sexy, and atheist? Amazing combination :)
the_Siliconopolitan says
Wholey Hell!I never thought you looked big, but that first photo is spectacularly unflattering. But it does make you look like a before/after advert.
anonymous says
Yowza! Jen, you look absolutely stunning in that last photo! On the other hand, I don’t think you looked bad to begin with. As other posters have pointed out, the before picture is not at all that flattering, while the dress in the after picture is very pretty.
Ruby Leigh says
At the risk of giving annoying unsolicited advice – Kris, you may have your calories set to low, and your body is going into starvation mode. I know that 1300/ day is like Biggest Loser diet level. Also, the types of calories are somewhat important too. 25 cals of lettuce is different than 25 cals of cheese. Anyway, my last thought is perhaps you should not be losing weight at all your body is comfortable where it is.
Tony says
Good job, but you’ve seemingly done what all diet programs do and chosen a deliberately unflattering picture for your “before”. I think a semi consistent level of effort would be what you sciencey people would call a control. Not that it matters, but I’d be willing to bet you looked better in the winter than your first picture would suggest. However, you look absolutely stunning here, which is all I can think of to say without getting horribly unfeminist.
Tony says
I didn’t deliberately copy all the phrasing from the post above mine. My subconscious is apparently a serial plagiarist.
Mark says
Great job – you look terrific, and are an inspiration to those of us who spend too much time buried in the books, sitting in front of our computers, and not taking good enough care of ourselves!
Eric_RoM says
Daahh-yam! Well done! Looks are great and all, but I bet you feel better too.
Thane Walkup says
Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn.I may say “Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn” again.Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn.
Dan Grabowski says
Jen, congrats on your success! It takes a lot to change. With that said, I have been stuck in my rut too. I lost 40lbs of fat at the bare minimum. I still had that gut and really wanted it gone. Another blog I read posted on a pretty interesting read called the 4 Hour Body by Tim Ferris. In his weight loss section, he had designed a diet that only allowed you to eat a protein source, a legume and a vegetable for every meal for 6 days a week. The 7th day you could go all out and binge on everything you had denied yourself that week. I would recommend the book even on top of your grad work because it was well worth the read.
Ebonmuse says
I was going to say the same thing. I made a New Year’s resolution to lose about 10 pounds this year, and I did it in about four months by eating 1700 calories a day, which comes out to half a pound lost per week. If you go on a crash diet, your body goes into starvation mode and your metabolism slows down. If you lose the weight more slowly, you can keep your body from “realizing” it’s happening, and it’s easier to not hit a plateau.
Ebonmuse says
Holy cow, that second photo is stunning. Being a happily married man, I say that in an entirely platonic way. :)
Kris says
Yeah, I thought it was pretty low but I just kind of wanted to see what would happen if I followed what the app suggested (also: data!). I mostly think my body composition has changed more than my weight. I’m a 5’2 female that can bench press 150 lbs… Most of my weight is muscle. I was trying the low cal thing to see if it would get rid of belly fat. And now I know :)
fiddler says
Looking damn nice. It’s also nice to see that you relocated to a much better place here.

Wow. Just wow. Jen, you look positively STUNNING in that last picture. You are definitely a inspiration for me to keep working towards my own weight loss goals. Way to go!!!
Christopher Stephens says
Well Jen, given that you’re an awesome sex-positive feminist blogger, I’ll assume you have some idea of the glorious, horrible lewdness aimed at you, mentally, for posting a picture like that on the internets. On that note, I’ll spare everyone the details …
R. says
Girl, you make me wish I was a chauvinist.
David Smith says
Sweet baby Jesus of Nazareth!Jen, that is the most beautiful picture I have seen all year. You are seriously gorgeous!

Wait – can women be attractive and smart? Did you somehow get dumber in the last few months? I’m very confused right now. ;) Congrats – you look awesome! Meant to say this earlier, but got lost in the convo, last time I arrived here.

Thanks for the inspiration, Jenn. It is great to see that you have been having so much success! :)
Alexander Puterbaugh says
I’m impressed. If 16 pounds makes that kind of difference, then maybe getting myself in shape wouldn’t be too terrible.

satanaugustine says
Wow, that’s really impressive. You look like you’ve lost even more than 16.6 pounds. You look great! And as someone who has struggled with weight issues for 23 years, I know losing weight is *not* easy. Nor is keeping it off.
Thomas Everett Haynes says
Hey Jen, I was reading some of your latest posts and heard about a “Skepticon Pinup Calendar” The photo of you in the black dress was one of the first things to show up in a google image search. I thought that was neat, so I shared. :)
