Tell me something happy!

I’m having a long day. Week. Semester. Between the club, grad school preparations, class, and work, I’m pretty much ready to crack. If you’re subscribed to comments and have been watching me pour fire on the flame war, I’m sorry – I usually ignore annoying comments, but it’s just one of those days.

So here’s a random fun post to get my mind off things. Tell me something happy for a change! All I usually get from you guys are links about people doing/saying painfully stupid things. What random cool, upbeat thing happened to you today, this week, or whenever?

My happy moment of the day: I got my genotyping results back, and they worked! Woo! Science, it works…sometimes.

Over the weekend I got drunker than I have ever been in my entire life and ended up cuddling on the couch with a young lady I don't know very well. Not only did this do wonders for my self esteem, but I realized that she was not drunk at all. Her judgment was not impaired and she still chose to cuddle with me!

Try some cute overload. Nothing is happier than really cute baby animals. All warm and fuzzy and completely oblivious to the world of pain and suffering that they've been born into as where they will fight for their meager survival in desperate hope for procreation and… perhaps… love. Except for kittens, people fraking worship cats…

A couple of weeks ago I was ordering something at Oasis in PMU, and the girl making my wrap said to me, "Wow, it's really good to see someone smile for once." Sorry, I can't remember what I was thinking about at the time… but the interaction made me smile for the rest of the day.

The fact we come here because we value your opinion and the time you take on the blog has to be worth a smile.

That and the existence of marshmallows.

I had an awesome day teaching. Started out my class with the story on the bionic eyelids, and in cell lab, we worked with slime molds to observe cytoplasmic streaming.

    today was payday! Yay!

also, today I went to lunch and had my Dawkins book with for reading material….."The Ancestor's Tale". A waitress commented on it enthusiastically and we struck up a conversation about Dawkin books in general and how great they are.

How lovely to be approached by random people with positive opinions about Dawkins and his books (and we didn't even discuss atheism…just the evoluationary aspects of his books). :)

I don't really have anything particularly happy to share, aside from Admiral Mullen's wonderful comment on DADT which I think has already been alluded to. But I think that someone should say sorry for sending you all the crappy stuff in the world. Sometimes I wonder if we're not just reading this so we can nod our head when Jen gets angry at bad science/religion/homophobic behaviour, and maybe that's a little wrong of us to expect.

I, for one, think the most interesting blogs were things like the pirate protest, and the how to date atheist women blog, and whilst I agree with 99.9% of things said here, the best things I've taken away is getting to know some of the commentators at this site a little better. You guys and gals know who you are.

So thanks for that, Jen. Sorry if we've put pressure on you for the negative, and thanks for the positive.

I tried out a new soup recipe, and it was pretty tasty! Also, I made chocolate chip cookies. That's made my pretty happy today.

Something happy? Umm… well, I'm sitting here with the flu staring at a backlog of work I haven't been able to finish because my brain's not functioning properly… but it'll end soon?

We've had an unusual winter here, Continental rather than Maritime. Snow and serious subzero (C) instead of rheumaticky rain and wind. Then it went mild and nasty last week. This week is back to sunshine, new snow and subzero. You know, like ski resort posters. Haven't seen grass since December. Sun and crisp cold air makes me feel more alive.

World poverty is falling: Parametric estimations of the world distribution of income:http://www.voxeu.org/index.php?q=node/4508

"World poverty is falling. This column presents new estimates of the world’s income distribution and suggests that world poverty is disappearing faster than previously thought. From 1970 to 2006, poverty fell by 86% in South Asia, 73% in Latin America, 39% in the Middle East, and 20% in Africa. Barring a catastrophe, there will never be more than a billion people in poverty in the future history of the world."

"Although world population has increased by about 80% over this time (World Bank 2009), the number of people below the $1 a day poverty line has shrunk by nearly 64%, from 967 million in 1970 to 350 million in 2006. In the past 36 years, there has never been a moment with more than 1 billion people in poverty, and barring a catastrophe, there will never be such a moment in the future history of the world."

One of my closest friends has left Rick Warren's Saddleback church because she sees now what a fraud he is. She's still a christian but at least he's not getting her money any more.

Tell you what makes me happy: the Christian fundamentalist who I went to college with is now helping me set up a uni Atheist society. His deconversion has shocked many of his friends and family but many are now questioning their own beliefs as they realize that one CAN become an ex-christian. The guy is now one of my best friends and he's far, far happier now that he is free from religion.

Last Saturday my wife and I volunteered as part of the NOAA Humpback Whale Sanctuary program and spent four hours on the southernmost tip of the big island of Hawai`i counting whales. We observed numerous whales and noted all sorts of behaviours. All indications are the population is healthy and growing.

Yesterday we returned to the site and spent a few more hours watching whales breach, blow, slap their flippers and tails and generally have a good time. Life is good.
