I used to write image processing software, and I frequently used Lena (tastefully cropped) as a test image. It really is a nice picture: lots of fine detail, good dynamic range, regions with gentle gradients, etc. But it’s no better than lots of portrait photographs — it was just adopted as a standard image for reasons I cannot possibly imagine.
