Watching the Trumpidency from afar is not fun. Even though that idiot will have less of an impact here in the EU, the way things are going, he might start a worldwide recession that will make the Great Depression look insignificant in comparison.
He might start a WW3 by giving Putin and Xi Jinping carte blanche to do whatever they want to their neighbors, who won’t just roll over.
But it is his anti-science position that will inevitably hamper scientific progress worldwide that makes me wonder – will young scientists flee the USA in significant numbers to be considered brain drain? They will have one barrier less than scientists from other countries who try to do the same – English language is currently the language of science and thus can be used anywhere in academia. No doubt many competent scientists will be welcome in the EU, or even in China.
Nazi Germany suffered from loss of scientific knowledge prior to WW2 and some of those immigrant scientists did eventually help the USA to invent the nuclear bomb first. But I doubt that stupid narcissist suffering from dementia is capable of comprehending that by targeting science, he is shooting his country in the foot whilst simultaneously giving others a boost.
Imagine what it’s like up-close. The thug who currently runs my country is the worst possible human being in every way that I can imagine.
Probably, and that won’t be the worst thing that happens. I hope that the brains can actually get away in time. Moving to Europe doesn’t strike me as “going down the drain”. 8-)
My one small ray of hope is that public opinion seems to be moving away from him…too slowly I think, but there’s some movement.
Not scientists, but I’m aware of multiple transgender computing experts who are actively trying to leave just from general social circles. So yeah, seems like there are people trying to get out
Will USA Suffer Brain Drain?
“Will?” I think it’s already begun.
The scandinavians have been quietly snapping up top-notch talent for a long time.
I’m here to place you under arrest for a brazen violation of Betteridge’s Law of Headlines.
Um…okay…so how should the headline read over news of this arrest…?
I think the bigger problem is the absolute disdain for science and expertise that have become prevalent since Trump’s first presidency and that is becoming more and more prevalent in Europe as well. It also has to do with male radicalisation and is one of the reasons boys are failing in education.
Will the US suffer a brain drain?
I certainly hope so. Because the alternative is for a lot of research to remain incomplete or be lost altogether, a lot of talent to be wasted, and a lot of unnecessary deaths to occur. Please take anyone you can.
