Jack’s Walk

We had a total of about 15cm of snow overnight, and Jack couldn’t be happier. One of his very most favourite things to do is to lay down in the snow and roll around. He starts with his head, digging in his nose and then sweeping it back and forth. Once his head and whiskers are sufficiently rubbed cold, he wiggles his body around, making sure to get full contact with his belly and boy bits, which will be bright red by the time he comes back inside. I don’t understand the appeal of this behaviour, but it makes my Bubba happy, and that’s good enough for me.

I, on the other hand, am not that happy about the snow. It’s beautiful, but it’s heavy wet snow.  The kind of snow that packs well and makes a good hard snowball. It’s also the kind of snow that’s heavy to shovel, which is how I spent the morning. Jack and Angus kept me company, but they weren’t much help. It took about an hour to clear the sidewalk and patio, and by the time I was finished, the muscles in my back and shoulders were complaining. They still are, and boy Howdy am I stiff and tired. I doubt that I’ll be able to stay awake until midnight, so I expect I’ll greet the New Year in my sleep. That’s fine with me. I’m not a party kind of person at the best of times, and tonight my bed is where I want to be. Gosh, I must be getting old.

I would like to take a moment to send my best wishes to our readers in Australia. The news we get from your country is frightening, and you’ve been on my mind. I hope you’re all safe.

    Happy New Year! I can’t believe it’s already 2020.

I can see the appeal of the snow. The sensation is intense (though I prefer water, it’s more, eh, immersive) and it gets the endorphins going. I also go from being a whiter shade of pale (but not seasick) to bright red when coming back from the sea. It shows that we have a functioning surface blood circulation, Jack and me. 8-)

My best wishes to all the Australians as well. Be safe!

And, yes, the heavy snow, it is the bane of roofs and people shoveling snow or trying to move in it. I’m hoping the sleep relaxed your sore muscles.

Happy 2020 everyone. I too went to bed before midnight, figured the year would flip over without my help.

Love the pictures of Jack having a good time. Snow looks good on him. The cats have never seen snow and I doubt they would approve. They prefer a spot directly in front of the fire in what passes for winter here.

The fires have abated for a little while, the nasty weather moved eastwards and has created havoc there instead. The monsoon is late to the tropical north but some rain is starting to hit the region as the Indian Ocean Dipole returns to neutral conditions. Hopefully this will take the edge off the searing heat as the air will have less time to roast as it crosses the continent.

Shoveling heavy snow is hard work -- I spent a while yesterday shoveling some around my house and was not happy about it. At least Jack enjoys it!

Best of luck in 2020 to everyone and I hope that the weather improves for everyone who has had bad weather, either cold and wet or hot and dry.
