Chapter 11 – West Hill: A Tiny World, Part 2
Little things. Moss, rocks, wood, water. All so tiny and pretty.

Did I say finally? Well, coming down the hill I was met with a big surprise. A Red Admiral! I sure wasn’t expecting to see a butterfly in late December. Also, note the bit of quartz behind its head!

And that’s it for now. We didn’t see everything there is to see and we didn’t visit all the relevant places around these hills. I already have some ideas for future trips, including to a waterfall on a different side of the phyllite hills and an ancient lime kiln close to the limestone hills. I will let you know if those trips happen. Thank you and I hope you have enjoyed the series!

I especially like the layered drops of water on the web in the second picture.
That red admiral looks rather old and battered, I sometimes find one in that condition in the house in winter.
I love the mushroom and the caterpillar. Also in the first, the light is beautiful and the rock and the moss that looks like pine twigs (with green leaves)* are very fine looking.

* = A severed conifer branch which still has green leaves/needles** attached is called havu in Finnish and they are used for various things in wintertime. I couldn’t find a corresponding word in English. The branches are eponymous to conifers in Finnish, a conifer is havupuu (puu = tree).
** = The needle-like leaf is called neulanen (diminutive for needle)
