Joseph Zowghi has sent us another of his fancy bat portraits. This time it’s a group of Ectophylla albas, otherwise known as Honduran white bats, gathering under a leaf. I was happy to find this submission because I’m fond of Joseph’s drawings. The rounded, repetitive lines draw me in and the artist has a talent for making bats look appealing. Thanks so much for sharing, Joseph.

Thank you all. I had hoped to make a coloring book and send it to Caine. A little wind got taken out of my sails when she passed away, and it may be a while before I resume work on the series. But if and when I do publish a coloring book, the folks at Affinity will be the first to know.

I have held a bat in my hands, and it was very neat. It showed a lot of tiny wickedly sharp teeth and clicked angrily at me, but honestly, I don’t think it wanted to stay inside that jug.
Oh yes. I’ve held a bat. It had somehow found its way into a wastebasket in a classroom at my college. I was amazed when it willingly climbed onto my hand. When I found it a safer place to roost, it simply crawled off. A memorable experience, to say the least.
I wouldn’t hold a bat in my bare hands. There’s some risk of bite and infection.
I once found a bat that’d gotten lost in our old sauna, flapping around, and it almost immediately landed on my pants knee. I then opened the window and lifted my knee towards it, and the animal got the hint.
I was wearing leather gardening gloves, rabies + fleas is not a fun combination to consider!
Something about the little wild animals, though, becomes memorable -- I had a similar experience with a hedgehog, I felt it breathe while in ball shape, and it was just… really, really weird and wonderful.
Oh I had some thick gloves, don’t you worry.

In the UK it’s actually illegal to handle a bat unless you have the appropriate license, I had a friend who did, and was called out at all sorts of times to deal with a bat in the wrong place. Understandably she did not like being referred to as ‘the Bat Woman’.
The little bats look cute and mischievous. The linked photo was full of cuteness, but reminded me of tribbles.
The style of the drawing is great.
