Finnish for “no longer in use”. The pictures are from spring 2017 and taken in the Vallilanlaakso park (in English: Vallila Valley). This is what was left of the one-track unelectrified railway to the port in Sörnäinen. The port facilities were relocated to Vuosaari in the southeastern corner of Helsinki and the rails and sleepers had been removed and junked. The tunnel leads to Pasila railyard and railway station, where various shunting operations for the trains from the port were done.
The port areas in Helsinki peninsula, apart from passenger and vehicle terminals for car ferries, high-speed passenger ferries and cruise ships to Sweden, Russia and Estonia are now in the process of being redeveloped into residential areas. This process has resulted in two railways becoming “käytöstä poistettu”.

Actually the other railway, has been partially converted to a bicycling and pedestrian highway, Baana.
I love that first shot, so beautiful. It’s very atmospheric.
I love mossy rocks. This really makes me want to go for a stroll in the woods.
We have a rail line that cuts through the Hudson Valley that is no longer in use. It was converted into the Rail Trail, a linear park. The highlight is an old railroad bridge that was converted into the Walkway Over the Hudson. The Walkway connects the trails in Dutchess and Ulster counties.

One of the nicest things about pine forests on eskers and rocks is the moss, also the lichens.

The Walkway seems to feature great views.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the City Planning people in Helsinki had taken the idea for Baana from the Walkway and other such rail trails.

No, nothing to do with any fruit. Baana is basically a slang word used for certain long but not wide surfaces, on which you usually go fast.
