“Things Have Changed.”

The Council of Conservative Citizens (CCC) is a U.S.-based white supremacist group that was founded in 1985 as a spinoff of the White Citizens Councils of the 1950s and 1960s that fought school desegregation, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

The group’s mission states an opposition to “all efforts to mix the races of mankind,” and was described by the Atlantic as the “largest white-supremacist group in the nation.” The group has also been active in Canada and was cited in Dylann Roof’s manifesto, the white supremacist behind the 2015 Charleston church massacre.

This week, one of the buildings at Concordia that was targeted by the bomb threat is scheduled to hold an Islamic Awareness Week between Monday and Thursday.

The email from the Council of Conservative Citizens of Canada included threats to “detonate once per day, a small artisanal amateur explosive devices,” targeting two floors of the Hall building and one floor of the Engineering, Computer Science and Visual Arts building, both of which were evacuated on Wednesday morning.

The specific locations were described in the email as “where Muslims hang out,” and the sender clarified that the bombs are “not meant to kill anybody. The only aim is to injure some Muslim students.” According to Global News, the email demands a halt of “religious activities of all kinds on campus.”

Full story here. I don’t have anything. At all. Just an enormous headache and desire to go to another universe entirely.

    Hehe.

    Non-provocative harmless rhetoric :)

Warrants hugs and opening of dialogue instead of punches.

  2. says

This makes me realize how thin the margin is between trolling and seriousness.

C4(as I pointed out elsewhere) is a form of plastic explosive. “Artisanal” is an odd usage for a bomb-maker, even in Canada -- terrorists aren’t typically part of the arts and crafts type. I’m suspicious; this seems more like the work of an idiot gamergater or 4channer than a conventional terrorist.

Note: I choose my words very carefully not to exclude idiot gamergaters and 4channers from terrorists; I believe there is overlap.

  3. says

The whole “artisanal amateur” business is to emphasise that they really, really don’t mean to kill anyone, just terrorize them. And y’know, if anyone does end up injured or killed, they can point to this as to their intent.

    Short form: basic ass covering.

  4. EigenSprocketUK says

Obviously it completely escapes the C4 terroridiots that there’s nowhere suitable for the ritual washing of feet. They’d be against even basic provision for that too, no doubt.

Until Concordia University stop religious activities of all kinds…

Interesting- conservatives are usually OK with religion as long as it’s xian.
And if bare feet, flip flops, and eating food are incompatible to a C4turbator, does that mean they want to ban all beach barbecues?

  5. cartomancer says

Don’t Canadians use the British English spelling of words like “behaviour”?

  6. rq says

Hipster terrorists, who’da thought. “Artisanal” means they’re going to spend unnecessary amounts of money on something of dubious value and quality.

But to be more serious, holy shit, Montreal. You’re freaking me out!! I hope this fails and fails hard, and that the people behind this pay the penalty.

Not sure, haven’t read the package, probably paleo of one stripe or another.

  8. says

    I don’t give a fuck about “artisanal”.
This group has demonstrated that they have knowledge of place and time, they’re terrorists.

Also the horror of naked feet. I’m glad summer happens rarely to Canada, wouldn’t want the snowflakes to melt when they see sandals…

That comment about flip-flops with bare naked feet make me think they’re advocates for socks-and-sandals, no matter the weather.

They sent a letter to McGill (the McGill radio station), too (via Siobhan). Why isn’t the media calling them terrorists, this an act of terrorism? At least Raw Story went with ‘white supremacists’, I guess?

  10. komarov says

So if I were to travel to Canada I’d find artisanal bomb shops there, would I? As a tourist I must know, how do customs handle these things? What about airport security? Can I just keep my souveniers in my handluggage or does they have to go into the hold? Because “artisanal explosives” sound almost cute.* Or maybe it could be marketing speak for fireworks.

    As for the specific grievances:
Friday prayers: Yes, awful. Real God-folk do that on Sundays. No, Saturdays. Except… no. I’ll get back to you.
Anti-Something speeches: Pot, meet Kettle and Bold Unsupported Claim.
Flip-flops: The worst excuse for footwear, I’ll concede that much. Hasn’t motivated me to take up Unstable Arts and Crafts, though.

And I salute anyone who, being unable to study in peace on account of passing footspes, would decide to set up a discrete bomb workshop somewhere and threaten people instead of simply studying in there. It’s a wonderfully overcomplicated ‘solution’ to a simple problem. Please don’t ever go into engineering. In fact, whatever you think of doing, just don’t.

*Not to mention highly unstable. Presumably the avant-garde IED is not bound by common conventions but is an uncompromising expression of creativity, meaning it can go off at any time. An artist who dies unexpectedly probably won’t leave behind any half-finished masterpieces for his admirerers to puzzle about. No unfinished symphonies here.

  11. Peter the Mediocre says

I couldn’t help but notice that they call themselves C4. Coincidence? I think not.

  12. rietpluim says

    Council of Conservative Citizens. C4.
Oh the stupidity. They can’t even count.

  13. quotetheunquote says

@18 -- No, they’re suitably pedantic -- you missed the “du Canada” at the end.

I just found out the other day, via a CBC radio documentary, that we used to have a “KKKK” as well -- though I don’t believe it is active any more, under that name -- I believe our white supremacist rats have scurried for cover under a number of other names (I know, Caine, insult to rats). “Kanada” is, by the way, is a genuine, if archaic, alternative spelling for Canada.

My level of “appalled” is currently not calculable -- I can only hope that the RCMP (gosh, it really is acronym day today, isn’t it?) will find the perpetrators, and come down on them like a ton of bricks. (Not exactly holding my breath, though, #airindiaflight182)

  14. Pierce R. Butler says

Well, at least we know they’re citizens, so the Mounties won’t have to waste time on immigrants.

  15. rq says

Also I found the phrase ‘of Lebanese origin’ to be completely unnecessary. Canadian citizen, period. His origin adds nothing but fear and bigotry to the story (also it’s quite likely he’s a christian, plenty of those in the middle east, too).

  16. says

Having grown up with Canadian-grown terrorists in the news, I don’t see this as a laughing matter and want legal action to fall on them hard. If any ineptitude will be diplayed and expected, it will come from the Racist, Corrupt and Misogynistic Pillocks (RCMP) and judges both biased and incompetent (too many to give examples).
