Here’s a contrast and compare: Canadian cops who smile and assist people seeking refuge, and ugly American border cops who want to catch those seeking refuge, so they can lock them up and deport them. This one’s a no brainer, seriously. There’s a family who will now receive help, settle in, and become productive Canadian citizens. Here’s the thing – this family was living in Delaware for two years, being productive citizens in the U.S., but they weren’t legal, and given the current climate, had no hope of becoming legal. So, it’s one big fucking loss for the country with no compassion, and a net win for the country with it.
America is going full tilt manic ugly these days, and warm & fuzzies ain’t easy to come by. My thanks to Canadians for this one.
Think Progress is also covering this story, in-depth. I don’t like the descent into full court ugly here in uStates, but I am grateful people seeking refuge have a place to go where they are welcomed and taken care of by decent peoples.

My family came over about the same time Trump’s did, because of the potato famines in Norway and Ireland. I know from journals (kept in Norwegian) that the nice people at Ellis Island said, “go to Minnesota; that’s where all you squareheads are …” and that’s how they wound up on a farm in Lyle, on stolen Lakota land. My irish-side ancestors’ history is less well-known but it’s believed to have involved moving west with the railways and also ending up in Minnesota. Trump’s ancestor sounds like a bit of an opportunist who wound up out in Yosemite trying to cash in on the gold rush.

Just updated this. People are pouring into Canada, where they have been officially welcomed by the PM. The difference is beyond night and day.
Here in uStates, we’re fucking ourselves into a barren hellhole.

Here are still many people blaming Merkel for “inviting” immigrants, despite the greatest wave occuring before she had any say on the matter and despite her only saying that Germany will accept those already in EU. The facts become in any dispute quickly irrelevant, people just mostly do not care for facts. The greatest fears of immigrants are always in areas lacking them. And loudest are screaming Czechs and Poles, despite almost no immigrants wanting to live neigher in Poland, nor in Czech Republic.
It is a funny world we live in.

For a lot of people, being able to discriminate and hate is a way of life.
