This works on wordpress.com. No idea if it works here, but it may be worth a try. 450px is my own preferred width; obviously you’d have to use youtube’s custom size thingy to get the dimensions you want. Oh, and it only works with the watch?v= version of the URL.
I have never set any video size. Used to be, I’d paste the url, there’s the video, all right and proper sized, just like on utube or wherever, but now they are more square than rectangular, and smaller. Well, got everything else to work, so I guess I’ll live with it, because I just don’t have time to fiddle around with this sort of thing. Thank you for all your help though, I do appreciate it.

Erm, wild stab in the dark, but you aren’t using the recently updated firefox browser, perchance? Because I am and the update did strange and unexpected things to websites and the things embedded in them. For example FTB is by default zoomed at 70%, at least according to my browser. It looks the same as always and I don’t recall ever setting a different zoom level but there it is nonetheless. Changing it also affects the video up top and, quite incidentally, makes the page unreadable at 100%. Maybe the videos just look odd to because your browser’s playing tricks on you…
For anyone getting pissed off at Firefox, try Pale Moon. I’ve been using it a couple of years now, and have found it an acceptable, often superior (it has a menu bar as standard, for instance) substitute.
Komarov, no, I am not. When I first set up Athena, yes, the latest mess installed, and horrified moments later, I uninstalled it. Then installed FF 29, so I could still have my classic theme restorer, and from there upgraded to 43.0.1. I refuse to go any higher for the moment. I prefer my FF tweaked to the last detail, just the way I like it. In the latest shit, you can’t even switch tabs in about:config anymore.
As far as I can tell, the view is at 100%, and fine. Videos show up the right size elsewhere. This is a very minor thing though, I just have to stop letting it bug the fuck outta me.

I believe firefox stores the zoom-level per site or something weird like that. If you use ctrl-+ and ctrl-- it will zoom and I believe the zoom sticks.
I copy the “embed” link from youtube then paste it in in text mode.
That works. The parameters are self-explanatory. Or you can go in and edit the sizes manually in text mode.
Yeah, I copy the url and paste, and that has always worked fine. It doesn’t now. And I don’t know what you’re doing, but the only thing which shows up in my text editor is the url.

Yes it does. I myself usually find this very handy: Once I find an appropriate level of zoom for a site, it “sticks”. Two additional hints: Ctrl-0 (zero) restores 100%; and, at least with FireFox 51, the (non-100% ?) zoom-level is shown in the address bar, at the extreme right adjacent to the reload hieroglyphic.

Apart from the zoom issue, for me this version is prone to spontaneous freezes or lags when loading embeds like the one above. Trying a suffix- and a -prefix single hyphen (both are Ok in Preview).

The upshot is, you’re right: there’s no longer a notion of “production code” there’s just a rolling baseline of “barely adequate” as more and more features get piled onto the heap and bugs get back-checked out. It’s a miracle any of this crap works at all, and Internet of Things is going to make it vastly worse (now you’re system administrator for your light bulbs!)
I stopped using antivirus in the early 90s and never looked back. Though, unlike you, I have had my machine taken over: I was in Amsterdam airport once, and hooked onto the open wireless (by accident!) and my machine immediately blue screened and after a reboot the hard drive was blinking intermittently and there were tons of new processes spawning. It almost certainly was an amateur injection attack against Windows’ buggy as shit uPnP layer, and I’d have been fine if I hadn’t fat-fingered the WiFi.
The people who need to constantly be patching are the ones that use constantly crappy software with a huge attack surface. In my mind, that’s like choosing to stand where the bullets are flying: stupid. And, to your point: the best security practice is -- “don’t be stupid.” Which is why things are so bad out there…

Oh Christ, trying to get rid of the effing McAfee and finding a way to kill the windows firewall, oy. Bloody nightmare in 10. Still haven’t figured out how to kill off windows defender. That’s for a day I have time to dig around. And there’s a fucktonne of bloatware I haven’t managed to unload yet, either. Unlike what seems like everyone else, I’m not app mad. I do not want every single fucking app on the planet, I do not want apps to control my apps, I don’t really want any of them. Oh, and can’t call a program a program anymore, no, it has to be an app. Fuck apps.

That’s an addon [linky]. I used to use it on Pale Moon and it worked fine, and I assume it still does. I swapped to BBCodeXtra ’cause it allows you to make custom tags. Pale moon’s a fork of Firefox (it forked at Firefox 26 if memory serves me right), so many Firefox addons work on it, though you sometimes have to use older versions than the current.
