Way back in 1985, reading that book left me permanently chilled. It’s never left my head. I skipped the 1990 movie, because they fucked it all up. If this is done right, that gets a big yay, but I don’t know if I could cope with watching this done right.

I read the book in grade 11, and it made a lasting impression. My first Atwood (none has since measured up, here’s to first impressions), I wrote (my teacher said) an excellent essay on the themes (missing a lot, of course), and even picking it apart didn’t ruin the (antithesis of) magic of the book -- a magic that was lost, chilling, powerful -- and I never could quite get that ending out of my head. I’ve been planning on re-reading it, because of real life’s attempts to catch up to it recently; moving it up in the list. Haven’t seen the 1990 movie, but not for any puritanical notions, just hasn’t been on the list. But this -- this is. Even though I think it won’t be a shared viewing experience -- I just don’t want to have to talk about it with Husband afterward (he likes discussing things). Also not a binge-watch.
