There were more than half a dozen Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers out this morning, all desperate for food. They even put a moratorium on territory fighting.
The juncos are the pathfinders. When I don’t clear off the snow early enough on the feeders, it’s the juncos that dig down and clear off the snow above the food. All the other birds come in after them.
Yes, the Juncos don’t seem to mind any amount of snow, but they are rather limited in snow removal. It took me way too long to clear snow off the table, railings, and seed dishes. Today, all digging down in the snow yields is more snow.
