Autumn Craft.

From Giliell, a beautifully embroidered hoodie, patterns from Urban Threads. This is a ton of work with a machine, it would take me half of forever to do by hand. There are times I really wish I did get along with sewing machines, and this is one of them. Click for full size.

    Wow, that is really beautiful!

Caine, I hear you on the sewing machine thing. I was initially so terrified of mine that my friends used to joke I must have died in a sewing machine accident in a previous life. However I was able to finally get to the point where I can actually use mine quite calmly! It surprises me to this day.

I tried with sewing machines. My um, oddness with electricity goes full berserk around the things, and everything breaks. When I was still living at home, I was eventually banned from the sewing room, with a stern warning to stay away from the machine.

That’s like me and knitting. I’m pretty sure knitting needles are only good for poking myself and other people, and making ugly sweaters. Yes, I’m a flurry of yarn and needles… a severely unco-ordinated storm of stitches!
Anyway, this is a beautiful sweater, Giliell! Composition, colour, and execution.

Knitting is the one thing I never got along with either. Sure, the yarn was supposed to slip from one needle onto the other, but instead it just always fell off.

The sewing machine and I were a love affair from day one. I learned on my gran’s old one which you could even switch back to foot pedal. One day I’m going to get it repaired. Right now I can’t wait to get into the house so I can set up the mechanic Bernina machine I inherited (40 years old and that model still fetches 300€ prices)

The tree in the back is especially good. It’s as if the leaves were just about to burst out of it. Also the tree might start walking (like a bird).

No way I could make something like this. (Also I’m not really fond of sewing and pretty bad at anything that requires accurate hand coordination.) I’m happy there are people who can and want to.

The nice thing about an embroidery machine is that it does most of the work for you. I’m not going to sell myself short here: it still requires skill, craft, knowledge and creativity to choose and combine your designs/fabrics/colours etc., but you don’t have to accurately stich yourself. Though I do love some free motion embroidery once in a while.
