Charlotte just lost millions in tourism and entertainment dollars after the National Basketball Association announced Thursday the group is pulling next year’s All-Star Game from the city.
The NBA had warned North Carolina and Gov. Pat McCrory that the city might lose hosting the game if the state did not make changes to HB2, the notorious anti-transgender law that prevents transgender people from using restrooms and changing facilities matching their gender identity.
“The NBA and the Charlotte Hornets have been working diligently to foster constructive dialogue and try to effect positive change,” the NBA said in a statement. “While we recognize that the NBA cannot choose the law in every city, state, and country in which we do business, we do not believe we can successfully host our All-Star festivities in Charlotte in the climate created by HB2.”
McCrory released a statement following the decision warning North Carolinians that “the sports and entertainment elite,” among others, “are imposing their political will on communities in which they do business, thus bypassing the democratic and legal process.”
I, uh, mmmph, :stifles scream: Just what in the fuckety fuck fuck do you think you’re doing, McCrory? Does it resemble “imposing your bigotry, fear, and hatred via the political process of legislation”? Any recognition there, you flaming fuckweasel? You certainly have zero basis to talk about bypassing the democratic and legal process. So, businesses aren’t allowed to decide where and when they wish to do business anymore? Interesting. Perhaps you should get out and talk to all your constituents who are Hornets fans. Maybe they have something to say about it all, given your determination to run your state into the ground. :spits:

Americans leveraging democratic influence by moving their money in protest is literally the most American thing that can happen. So when McCrory does it, it’s democracy; when businesses do it, it’s imposition.
No double standards to see here, folks.
Whiney McCrory continues to push the narrative that HB2 protects women and children. I guess that is all he’s got at this point. He has proven himself to be a shameless republican liar. During his campaign, he promised not to sign any legislation that would further restrict a woman’s right to safe and legal abortions. During his tenure as governor, he has also helped Duke Energy (who he used to have ties with) weasel out of cleaning up all of the coal ash storage pits. I hope that he becomes a one-term governor and has to leave Raleigh with his tail tucked between his legs.
Oh good. I’m glad they followed through on this.
I kinda get the feeling, though, that Hornets fans (and basketball fans in general), no few of them, will vent their frustrations on the NBA instead of drawing the straight obvious line to McCrory.
Maybe McCrory really does represent his constitutents. In which case -- everyone get out of NC and let it sink.

He doesn’t, especially in Charlotte. It was in response to Charlotte’s LGBTQ protections that McCrory and pals panicked and dug the hole they are in now. All the protests, the university going against the law, the brewers, the business owners putting up signs they welcome everyone, and people can pee in peace? No, the majority of his constituents think he’s a stupid, incompetent, lazy asshole. It’s not just this one aspect of things that he’s fucked up, apparently, he’s fucked up everything.

Last I checked, McCrory’s approval ratings were at the lowest they’ve ever been at 37%. So two thirds of the polled population do not like the job he’s been doing. Whether that’s due to loss of revenue or to promotion of discrimination or usurping municipal authority or just because he’s a smug, smarmy assface is up for debate.

If there’s someone running against him in the next election, he ought to be lunchmeat. I can picture the ads already: “McCrory’s jobs program: -120,000 jobs for North Carolina…”

The individual running against him is the current AG of NC, Roy Cooper, who refused to defend HB2 and who also petitioned McCrory to veto the shitty voter ID law. Current polls have them about neck in neck despite McCrory’s unpopularity, which is unsettling, but it’s early yet.
