America the Beer

Anheuser Busch’s decision on Tuesday to rename its signature Budweiser brand “America” did not taste great to critics on Twitter.

As The Atlantic reported, the Dutch-owned company announced that it would rebrand the beer through the November elections, which the company’s branding firm defended by saying, “We thought nothing was more iconic than Budweiser and nothing was more iconic than America.”

There has been a Twitter outbreak over the news, and it’s not a positive one.

My wife suggested that maybe they should have gone with “Murica!” instead.

The stuff is made by abusing rice (plus some barley and hops to hide the fact they don’t know how to properly use any of the ingredients (including the water)). It is “beer” only in the sense that name sells rather better than “rat piss”, and takes several hours to dissolve concrete. The best disposal method is unclear; rocketing it into the Sun (ignoring the danger of the rocket exploding and spreading the stuff over a wide area) would extinguish the fusion within, without making any notable dent in the stuff.

… it would rebrand the beer through the November elections…

Then for Christmas they can rename it Jesus.

I feel like this is the sort of easily-missed subtle humour that the British engage in.

I’m pretty sure the company knows what its product tastes like, and I’m pretty sure the rebrand’s “unfortunate” implications are all too calculated.

Eh. I think the sneering at Bud is mostly classism. It’s hardly as if Stella Artois or Kingfisher or whatever other mega-company beer is a whole lot better. And a fair percentage of the smaller craft brews I’ve had are way more pretentious than they are good.

It’s not as if most beer has a fine discernable flavor after the first couple slugs anyway. It’s beer it’s not some flippin’ sipping cognac or a fine port or single malt. Spare me pretentious yuppie beer snobbery. You know what’s the best beer? Whatever’s in your hand.

(All that said, I haven’t had a beer in about 5 years but that’s more to do with gout and the purines in some beers than anything else)

I can and do drink pretty much every kind of beer, as long as it tastes like beer.
    But not Bud.
    nothing to do with snobbery
