I remember when I was little we would pick them when they were ripe but not yet bursting. If you peel the shell off, they looked like little birds without heads, the seeds soft like feathers.
:D Unfortunately, the native Milkweed has been disappearing from all over ND. Poor butterflies.

It disappeared from my old neighbourhood when they blasted out the cliffs, filled in the pond, and paved it all for the new development. :( That one hurt.
