I feel pretty damn good!

I do believe my health is stabilizing. There’s always some bruising when one is on blood thinners. But over the last few weeks the ease with which I would bruise has diminished, and what bruises I do get seem to resolve over a shorter, more familiar period of time than they did in Sep and Oct. Plus, I did the fun shock the face-and-arm-muscles test, which checks for nerve damage in case I had suffered a mini-stroke during the Great Blood Disease of aught ’13 and those result were encouraging.

If I wasn’t now approaching dead broke, being shit-canned over this stuff and losing my critical less-than-minimum wage disability and health insurance this week, for the sin of falling ill and suffering a heart attack and other scary complications this year, I’d be pretty damn happy, too. I would not ask for change in your Paypal account if there were any other viable options, but there’s not. Guys and gals, five bucks matters to me right now. If you’re wondering, below is a thumbnail sketch of how it came to this. [Read more…]

I’m too sexy for this blog

Someone asked about health issues, for now my health continues to improve incrementally, the pic below was taken a few mins ago right out of the shower. That’s me at a lean, spanking 155 lbs, down almost 50 lbs from my obese max. Having a heart attack and, as it turns out, an underlying blood chem disorder that facilitated it, the scare the former causes and the loss of appetite that ensued from the latter, has a silver lining, I guess. It’s beginning to look a lot like the war on Christmas

Ahh the holidays, my favorite time of the year. And while I had hoped to wait until next week to start blegging for holiday reader contributions, circumstances have forced me to hang out that shingle starting today. I’ll have the gruesome details later, but it’s bad: let’s just say my employer doesn’t particularly want someone who suffered a heart attack and a bunch of related and precursor complications on their pristine rolls. Which means no more disability, and in a few weeks I’ll either be on Cobra or in big, big trouble, smack dab in the middle of treating a potentially fatal condition. The Cobra premiums are ghastly, about 700 bucks a month, but with your help I might be able to pull it off. Thank FSM for Obamacare, which I will enroll in this month for coverage to begin next year and they can’t deny or fuck me over on cost because the ACA won’t let them. ::Evil liberal cackle::

Speaking of the holidays, Madam Half-Governor Queen of Rightwing Spectacle, who no doubt never has to worry about health insurance or employment even though she can’t differentiate ex with or without search engine help, has a ghostly-written book to sell, a war against the imaginary war on Christmas to wage, and an ax to grind. This week she takes aim at that socialist Pope, because he’s been showing too much concern for the have-nots: [Read more…]

A tale of two images

gun1

Being skeptical means one foot on the open-minded  side of the fence, and one foot firmly in the That’s-Bullshit side of the property line. it’s a tough straddle sometimes. But here’s how it pays off. See that image above? It’s a group of pro-gun demonstrators, that showed up uninvited at a Mothers against gun violence meeting. Which is kinda inappropriate and even a little bit creepy. BUT — it’s not quite as bad as it appears. Go below.

Thousands dead, many more missing in wake of Typhoon Haiyan

Haiyan at peak intensity juxtaposed over the US East Coast. The size and power of this storm has left some storm meteorologists wondering if the current Dvorak hurricane intensity scale should now be extended to include Category 6.

Survivors of what may end up being the most deadly storm in human history are trying to pick up the pieces in the Philippines, after Typhoon Haiyan raked the island nation with 200 mph wind gusts and a ten meter storm surge. In some places there’s not many pieces left to pick up: [Read more…]

Super Typhoon Haiyan is leveling the Phillippines

Update: Reported via the NOAA, “the US’ National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) had issued a bulletin saying that the storm’s intensity could no longer be tracked using the widely-used Dvorak storm intensity scale.” If it were to be rated, guesses are from strong cat 6 to cat 7.

This is just the beginning of what some climate researchers say may be in our collective future. Super-storms, hyper-canes, some inevitably hitting densely populated regions, taking out vast sections of our interconnected, interdependent global economy: [Read more…]
