SCIAM steps in it bad

An online science publisher asked a SCIAM blogger for some unpaid work. Blogger said no thanks. Publisher then called her … a whore. Yeah, that really happened. The blogger then took to her site to write it up, as she certainly should have, and SCIAM spiked the post creating a completely unnecessary secondary issue and coming off like control freaky idiots. A lot of science bloggers are copying DNLee’s original and now censured post — temporarily we hope. Sean Carroll has it up here.

Judging by the standards of the wild jungle the Internet has long been, there’s nothing particularly snarky or biting about her response. If anything, given that she was just called a whore for not working for free, and then overwritten by SCIAM to boot, I thought she showed remarkable restraint on the matter.

Unskewed polls make a comeback to support Cruz

I’m still stoked that nature put a gun to my head, pulled the trigger, and the hammer fell on an empty chamber.

But, back to the world at large … remember when polling started to show the race slipping away from Romney a year ago? And wingnut sites sprung up claiming the polls were skewed, illustrating the one thing wingnuts excel at, denial of widely-observed empirical facts? Now that polls have swung against the GOP on the shutdown and debt ceiling, they’re back: [Read more…]

Mixed results health results, but I’ll take ’em

So, newsflash, waiting in the doc’s office to find out you probably have one of ten different kinds of cancer is not a fun activity. The ghost of Lorenz was present, space-time stretches and distorts, minutes drag by; it’s an ordeal. Every time a door opens into the waiting room, you wonder if now’s the time, the beginning of the end, where you will be beckoned back into the bowels of medical wonderland for a grim pep talk on the kick-ass advances in chemo-therapy or bone-marrow replacement waiting for you. An adventure of sorts, into the irreducibly broken side of human physiology, where someone will play the anatomical model with a hidden pathological condition. Today, I landed that starring role, the door finally opened, my name was called. [Read more…]

Off to the doc

I’ll see the doc in a couple of hours. Prepared for the worst. Drop me a few shekels if you can. Hopefully this won’t be another vague “something is wrong but we don’t know what it is go do some more expensive tests” deal. I’ll probably get canned next week if they don’t come up with something, and that means I lose my health insurance.

The GOP shutters blink

Yes, I’m sweating out a possible cancer diagnosis and in desperate need of a few bucks to get through the next few doc appointments. I have health insurance, but there’s copays and now my employer is threatening to cut me off next week.

Watching Teaparty Republicans, who ran in part on shutting down the government and, we now know, were funded by at least one meaty tentacle of the rabid, brainless Kochawhorus intent on obstruction and shuttering, claim they don’t want a government shutdown is a good introduction for any new student into crazy modern day US politics. We have a slightly center left party with components that are corrupt, slimy, and spineless, and we have a party that is bug-fuck crazy and completely reliant on a suite of zombie lies. But the non bug-fuckers may have felt enough pain on the shutdown and looming debt ceiling that they’re offering Obama a shitty but potentially fruitful deal: [Read more…]

That’s a sad development

Update: I got a few donations but I need a couple more. Sorry to bother you with this.

On some of the tests I’ve had to take over the last few weeks … They called me in to discuss the results of one of them. They wouldn’t tell me over the phone and I’m pretty good at judging voices. My guess is it’s not going to be great news. They didn’t admit me to the hospital or anything, and they didn’t rush the appointment to discuss the results, which is about the only thin reed of hope I’m holding onto.

I had texted my supe with an update earlier this week. Right on cue, there was a threatening email in my inbox from someone I’ve never heard of telling me I’ll be fired soon, probably next week. I’m out of FMLA because of the heart attack and the subsequent complication, which had the bad timing of happening at the start of the year and that started the FMLA clock in January. Because health insurance in America is tied to your employer, losing your job for being sick, being in chemo, whatever, means losing that health insurance when you need it most. There’s an option called COBRA that can extend it after being separated from service, but it will be 700 or 800 dollars a month for me. If anyone wants to drop a few bucks in the Paypal till, have at it above.

I don’t know, this is just a guess, but if I had to make that guess, I’d say it’s going to be lymphoma or leukemia something like that. Lymphoma and leukemia are treatable, especially when caught early. But without health insurance either one would be a certain death sentence. If this really goes south I’ll probably have to beg my executive editors at Daily Kos for some kind of life saving fund raiser. A disease like that could run into thousands, maybe tens of thousands of dollars, in out of pocket expenses even with insurance. And I will have the distinction of having suffered a major heart and unrelated cancer in less than a year. Our employer sponsored group health insurance system in the US is just not set up for that kind of thing.

New shooting in DC started at White House

The all clear sign has been given but lots of questions remain about a reported shooting and car chase in the nation’s capital. Preliminary reports suggest a car tried to breach security at the White House, that that evolved into a car chase, rumors are the suspect has been captured or killed.

Via Pete Williams live ‘at about 2 PM the driver of this car tried to ram one of the White House security gates. Driver then tried to drive away, a car high speed dramatic chase ensued up Pennsylvania Ave until the car crashed a block past the capital building. The female driver then jumped out, and a shoot out occurred in which she was killed and at least one DC police was hurt and transported to ER by helicopter.’

There are rumor on Twitter of another suspect in custody. By the way, those capital police are furloughed and working without pay today.

Update: It appears the second occupant in the shooter’s car was a child for chrisakes. The shooter may have been hurt in the car crash and not shot. But she is in custody.

Republicans discovering Obamacare saves them money

This shutdown and debt ceiling stalemate is now solidly trending toward catastrophe for the Teaparty. But it could get a lot worse. There have been just a few stories like the one below trickling in from grass roots conservatives, but if that turns into a deluge, it’s a full-blown Teaparty nightmare. I realize these clowns don’t think much, but did they really assume there would be no Republicans among the throngs of Americans signing up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act? Or that some of them might soon discover the hated Obamacare is nothing more ominous than a set of boring websites with affordable health insurance policies that saves them loads of money? Florida teaparty hoisted by their own teatard

Indeed, that title has a delicious double meaning because of this deal. It’s kinda funny. Background: so on Oct 1, 2013, Obamacare goes live in the sense you can enroll if you are eligible. The images linked above take you to some basic info on how it will work. But briefly, there are these super websites that each state was supposed to set up. With info and links and enrollment checklists for various policies offered under the ACA. Because this WH and HHS are relatively competent, they anticipated two important things: some states would drag their feet because they’re currently run by the inmates dedicated to destroying evil Obamacare, and the online process would be confusing to many who are eligible, especially people who don’t spend a lot of time surfing.
