This might have made a great Netroots Nation 2012 party theme if it had happened sooner. Yesterday morning MSNBC Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough was whining about a piece in the NYT about Romney’s wealth and his recent multimillion dollar makeover of a beach mansion. The conservative commentator immediately went into the all too familiar rightwing persecution mode, using the Time as a wedge to accuse all media of hurting Romney and trying to help Obama, saying they ignored John Kerry’s enormous wealth back in 2004, and beltway toadie Mark Halperin nodded and grunted with Joe in the side peanut gallery. It was awful and yet all too typical of the wanton deception used by right-wing sympathizers and so-called centrist reporters. There was one difference though.

Willie Geist began finding stories on the Internet about John Kerry’s enormous wealth, and the first one he came across wasn’t buried in the homes section in the middle of the week like Romney’s, it was on page A-1 of the popular Sunday Edition one month before the 2004 presidential election. Since then many more stories have come out that Scar and Marky-mark must have missed. Which is hard to imagine as ‘lo these many media years ago, there were many, many stories about Kerry’s inherited wealth and east coast elitism. But Scar finished the segment up talking about it just ‘felt like’ the media had a liberal bias and so he stand by it.

The reason I say that might make a good party theme is because, a few years ago we had a full-blown, Texas style tequila swilling hoe down at Netroots Nation based on Bill O’Reilly’s infamous meltdown. NRN staff looped CD’s showing O’Reilly screaming out “Fuck it! we’ll do it live!” about ten different ways, to music and special effects, playing in a dozen TV’s placed in a 6th street bar in Austin while progressives got drunker than a skunk.

At about midnight right in the middle of that aprty, me a nd a friend get a call from Ed Brayton, he’s finsihing up a poker game and sounded at first kinda worried. “Can you guys come get me, soon?” We went up there expecting to find Ed in his underwear about to beaten. But he was actually cleaning up and just wanted to bail woth his winnings. It was an interesting night in progressives netroots politics and Billo’s rapping rant was etched into my memory until detah or senility do them part.

That particular piece of party tape would be hard to beat, and I haven’t seen the full MSNBC clip, but Scar’s humiliation might still have some party theme potential.
