G=Gingrich, R=Romney, S=Santorum, the actual delegate math is horribly confusing. But Romney will bring in a nice haul from ID, VA, and MA. In OH, Santorum somehow managed to totally fuck up his paperwork in several key districts and won’t be getting those delegates no matter who wins them.
(Twitter is blowing up tonite: I’m @SAndrewDKos). Interesting stat: we’re clocking over 100k hits an hour at Daily Kos right now.

10:30PM Central: (Update, Santorum takes ND caucus! Romney wins ID caucus) It’s a barn-burner in Ohio with Santorum 417,821 to Romney 423,680 with ~92% in (NBC says they can’t call the race tonite, I think Romney has it and I’m out folks, g’nigh). Extrapolating, there are about 50K votes up for grabs for the two front runners to split at this time. Some remaining counties are notoriously slow to report and may not be in tonite. But the narrative is now set: Romney cannot close the deal even though he outspent Frothy $12 million to one million dollars.
Romney camp now pinning hopes on remaining Romney strongholds, Cuyahoga County, includes most of Cleveland. Sources on ground saying Cuyahoga probably not enough to cover current Romney deficit. More Romney strongholds in other cities, but Santorum outperforming every poll state wide. Chuck Todd saying race may not be called tonight or for days.
9:20PM Central: (Forward observers seeing fresh results tell me Santorum likely to win OH, Romney sources likewise claiming Rom strongholds not all counted) Ohio — tightening a little Santorum 307k Romney 292K with 70% in. If Santorum wins Ohio we’re back to Romney in hot water. Mittens outspent Santorum by 12 million to one in the Buckeye State. I literally cannot believe conservatives in those state are this fucking dumb. But you know what that means?

It’s not hard to understand why Santorum appeals to a lot of voters. I mean, he’s against all the right things.
@ Bob: Yeah, but this dumb? Consider, say, the first President Bush, or John McCain before he ran for President. Hardly the perfect statesmen, but compared to this crowd? Either of them would be miles better even than Romney, let alone Santorum.
The odd think is that they’ve all flip-flopped. For example, Santorum supported at lease some government intervention in healthcare, while Romney contributed to Planned Parenthood and spoke up for them. Too bad they’ve had to out-crazy the Teabaggers.
Is it really that big an upset for Santorum to win Oklahoma, the most disgusting state in the union?
Hell, at least parts of Mississippi are bearable. None of Oklahoma is.
Oh–and the cinema in the back-asswards East Texas town I lived in was still playing that stupid junk food pitch at the movies when I was a teenager in the 70s.
I’m thinking this is the best possible outcome. Romney fails to clinch, which keeps the messy primary contest alive; but Santorum’s odds of actually pulling it off are now essentially zero. Which, on balance, I think is a good thing: I had begun to fear that a Santorum bid in the general, as hilarious as it would be, carries just a little to much risk.
Santorum as the GOP’s main candidate is a little bit like the nuclear deterrence strategy of Mutually Assured Destruction: Yeah, odds are you wind up averting a bad outcome (Romney presidency/conventional war), but there’s a slight chance of a disastrous outcome (Santorum presidency/unrestricted nuclear war).

Well that doesn’t jibe with what I recall from Steinbecks’ awesome Grapes of Wrath novel which is pretty much tehfirts thing that I (an Aussie who has only spent 1 week in the States) think of when Oaklahoma gets mentioned.

The Okies there were very smpathetic and likeable characters. Tom Joad, Rosasharn and all. But I guess they left that state.
