The original sign was put up by American propagandists during the reconstruction of Germany after WWII. Part of the program of de-nazification was getting the idea “you lost because your ideas were wrong” across to the supporters of the former regime.
I think it’s past time when the world starts telling Americans “your ideas are wrong, back off” but imperial hubris never backs off until it gets a bloody nose. The US, in fact, got a bloody nose in Indochina, Iraq, and Afghanistan. It takes a severe beating to get through to some people.
I have some sympathy for the aesthetes who argue that Twitter’s character-length limit encourages a new rhythm and structure in writing, because I believe that the animated .GIF file is a legitimate art-form (much as David Byrne believes that Powerpoint is a legitimate art-form). I am still disgruntled that aesthetes in the JPEG standards group decided to leave out animated JPEG because they hated HTML <blink> tag – another much-maligned and suppressed art-form. Used correctly, there is a time and a place for many of these methods of communication.

The worst part of finally shit-kicking the USA is that it’s still going to be the proles taking the beating. The rich will have their bunkers or, failing that, will find that the Geneva Convention actually applies to them.

I did that on purpose but it’s hard to time other people’s reading speed. I wanted it to be just about right for someone to look at, read, and mentally turn away before it flicked. If I had to do it all over again, I’d find a better match on the stencil font, but I’m not that crazy a perfectionist.

What I’m observing is that the rich (they’re evil, not stupid!) are forming an international superclass. They’re highly mobile, they’re not tied to any particular geography, they are equally at home in Prague, London, Antigua, or New York – and if the canapes get nasty in one place, their money has already moved to another, and they’ll quickly follow. They’re not worried about global warming (yet) because they will go where it’s not too bad, and they already own nice places there. A nuclear war would be bad for business, naturally, which is why they’ll continue to try to make sure there isn’t one.
