Ohio, the state I live in, can claim to be the birthplace of many presidents but none of them covered themselves with great glory. That does not mean that the people of Ohio are not capable of jealously guarding the right to name random national landmarks after them, as Jordan Klepper discusses with reference to an Alaskan mountain that the native Athabascan population has always referred to as Denali though officially it is called Mount McKinley.

I’m surprised you don’t know of William McKinley’s many accomplishments. He presided over a period of increasing prosperity bulwarked by his defense of the gold standard and fiscal conservatism, added to the US’s overseas empire by concluding favorable terms with Spain ceeding territories in the Carribean and the Pacific and adding the kingdom of Hawai’i to the list, and becoming one of our most beloved presidents. Perhaps his greatest accomplishment was unselfishly stepping aside and allowing a mentally deranged anarchist (Leon Cogsloose) to put two bullets into his substantial frame. With McKinley’s great sacrifice, Vice-President Theodore “Bullmoose” Roosevelt took over and established the basis of modern American political progressivism, founded the National Parks Service, and squelched the rumors of the assassination being a false-flag operation intended to make Roosevelt’s younger cousin, Franklin, look ineffectual in the tasks of preparing America to take over the world during one of the coming Great Wars thereby proving the goodness of the Confederate States of America and consequently wreaking revenge upon the reputation of McKinley who had fought as a Union Officer in the War Between the States.
There is serious discussion of a four-part biographical series being produced by HBO about William McKinley’s life starring David Hasselhoff, whom everybody loves.

Why on earth does a different state have a say over the names of landmarks that aren’t within its borders? Or is it a federal rather than state managed thing?

This comes under the National Parks Service. They say that they have no opposition to making the change to Denali but there is a part of the law under which they operate that says that they cannot consider a change to the a while the issue is under consideration by Congress, and Ohio congresspersons regularly introduce pointless bills that never go anywhere but serve the purpose of stymying the NPS.
so… spite politics then.
I rather think that’s become the most popular political method in America.
