2015 World Cup update #3

Yesterday’s two games ended up with the expected results of the favorites winning, South Africa beating Zimbabwe and India beating Pakistan.

The former game was notable for the fine performance by Zimbabwe. South Africa batted first and Zimbabwe rocked them early four wickets, including those of tier key batsmen AB De Villiers and Hashim Amla, leaving them tottering at 78/4 but as is the case with the best teams, South Africa had the resilience to fight back and two magnificent innings by JP Duminy and David Miller ended up hammering the Zimbabwe bowlers at the end to finish an excellent score of 339/4.

Zimbabwe made a spirited effort to reach this total but it was just too much for them and they were all out for 277 in 48 overs. But thy served notice to other teams that they are dangerous and need just a couple of breaks to go their way to be capable of defeating even the most favored teams. They do need to have better bowling at the ‘death’, the term given to the final overs of the innings where the batting side gets hyper-aggressive.

India’s win over Pakistan was much easier, scoring for 300/7 and bundling out Pakistan for 224 in 47 overs.

So no upsets so far in the tournament.
