It turn out that Stephen Colbert solved the etiquette crisis by sitting next to Michelle Obama. Colbert also discusses the obsession of reporters with the food served at the White House.

Though to be honest, I have to say that our French media didn’t handle this visit much better. They too devoted an inordinate amount of time to such things as etiquette, table arrangements and so on. Economic and political issues didn’t seem to excite as much interest. Few even gave a hard look at the awkwardness of France’s position as USA’s (and specifically the Democrat president Obama’s) ally in the light of the Snowden revelations.
Amusingly, Stephen Colbert was described in the French newspaper Le Figaro as “a rather conservative comedian” (“un humoriste plutôt conservateur”).

That’s funny. But considering that many conservatives in the US also think he is one of them, it just shows that he manages to stay in character pretty well.
