I noticed that, too. I didn’t click on the link in the OP, but in the clip that I saw on TV, the water wasn’t being sprayed into the fire itself. At first, I thought that maybe they were trying to create enough of a current at the surface to keep the fire away from what looked like a former drilling rig; but then I noticed that, if that was the goal, they seemed to be pushing in the wrong direction.
I, too, have no clue what they were doing.
