Now the regret and rationalizations are setting in as the FBI tracks these traitors down and arrests them. Actually, the rationalizing started early.
Asked why they were storming the Capitol, one woman became angry, saying they weren’t storming, and that that was a “media narrative.” They were just making their voices heard, she said. Then she continued climbing over a wall.
They hold the presidency, the senate, and the supreme court, and they still think their voices aren’t heard. I’m personally a bit tired of constantly having to hear these shrieking assholes.

It’s now becoming clear that this attack on the Capitol was far more violent and far more dangerous than we thought. Some of these people were seriously looking for people to take hostage and/or kill.
The main targets were VP Pence, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Shumer, anyone with a D after their name, and the press. Here is one the police are looking for.
More specifically, they were looking for VP Pence and/or high profile Democratic politicians like Nancy Pelosi or Shumer.This is one of the zip tie guys. He also had pepper spray and a taser.
There were at least three of these. They’ve already arrested one.

There was almost a week of communication between the trump admin and the pentagon – it appears to be an attempt to reduce the security during the insurrection. The whole thing was planned. Badly, but planned.

.3. The alphabet so called “intelligence agencies” such as DHS/FBI NSA, CIA DI etc.. They had no idea that a violent mob was on their way.
In this case, all they had to do is read Facebook, Parler, Stormfront, and a few other websites.
These terrorists were doing their plotting on the internet in public.
.4. Most of the GOP elected officials, many of whom were hiding with the Democrats while a mob roamed the building, looking for them.

Trump has already pardoned people who were not yet convicted.
Carter issued a blanket pardon for Vietnam war era draft resisters.
I would hope not, but hope has been on a losing streak lately.

I’ll add here, that all of these many dozens of people the FBI is searching for are already counting on Trump to…pardon them. They are well aware of the presidential power of the pardon.
About pardons: Can Trump pardon people for violating DC’s criminal code? Presidents can’t pardon people for state crimes, but DC circumstances are different.
I doubt Trump will pardon anyone involved in the Capitol attack. There’s no real benefit for him to do so, and frankly he’s probably too busy trying to figure out how to cover his own ass.

AFAICT, all the courts in Washington DC are Federal.
Which means even Trespassing or Curfew violations might be subject to a presidential pardon.
A recent Financial Times opinion argues that at least some Presidential pardons could constitute prosecutable obstruction of justice offenses.
I’m not sure if pardoning insurrectionists would count as such, or if the political will exists to bring charges even if it did, but there it is.

When my father was a civilian employee of the US Navy, he used to say that his one hope for the US was that the Russian Naval Supply system was worse than ours. I think the FBI and all the rest of the relevant law enforcement agencies are also well aware of that basic fact. There is no need to rush these things. law enforcement is well versed in the kinds of operations in which they do the investigations and identification of all the suspects locate them all and at a time of their choosing gather them all up in a couple of days and seize all the evidence.
I would think that the first step has already begun, some have been arrested and more are identified I have no doubt, if they show up on Jan 20 in Washington they will be apprehended. We will see how it unfolds, congress and courts are not finished with this yet and have only just started.
if the asshole does try issuing a blanket pardon it would truly tie him to the insurrection in a way that would be very hard to deny and would probably backfire as well

Laurence Tribe, Harvard constitutional law professor, has been on MSNBC lately talking about the President’s pardon power. While broad, it isn’t absolute. For example, if the President is bribed to give a pardon it probably won’t stand if scrutinized. Tribe doesn’t think the President can pardon himself as it leads to a can of worms where the President cannot be held accountable, which the constitution expects. I suspect trying to pardon those attempting a coup de etat to keep the President in power might not survive review. But IANAL.

As far as I am aware, the current speculation is Trump (trying to) pardon himself (an untested legal hypothesis). An alternative I’ve seen floated is similar to Tricky Dicky: Trump resigns and “president” Pence pardons him. Ford said he never did a deal with Nixon; whether or not that is true, it does seem far more likely Trump would claim Pence did a deal him (whether or not it is true, and whether or not Pence does pardon Trump — remember, Trump lies). However, from what I recall reading, most sane observers don’t see Trump resigning (deal or no deal) because, at the least, of his pathological hatred of being seen as a loser.
As far as I know, in the States, accepting a pardon is considered (legally?) to be an admission of guilt (whether or not there has been a conviction). “Guilty!” is another thing it’s hard to see Trump agreeing to, albeit he would of course lie about it.

Recent and ongoing coverage of this on the FtB Discord makes it clear these people were specifically targeting women, black, and other PoC legislators. They seemed to know where certain peoples’ offices were and were making beelines right for them. Armed, of course. Some with zipties, i.e., with the intention of taking a hostage or worse.
And the more we find out about this, the more it looks not only like a deliberate coup attempt, but like the capitol police were complicit, and I don’t just mean taking selfies with the terrorists. This is possibly the worst act of domestic violence that has ever taken place on our soil in the last 100 years in every metric aside from actual deaths (McVeigh has that one sewn up). And it was allowed, encouraged, and provoked by the powers that be and law enforcement.
This is chilling. I’m sitting here shaking, feeling the deathly freezing howling wind of narrowly-averted timelines in which this went much, much, much worse.
And the worst thing is, not only will the worst that happens to these terrorists be a couple of token slap-on-the-wrist sentences, the Biden admin will do with Trump what Ford did with Nixon. As if that didn’t set the wrong precedent already, Biden and his lot of spineless corporate toadies will make a big show of “reconciliation” and “healing” and “moving on” and let these terrorists and their insane traitorous administration off the hook.

This was not a small operation to get information and lying to congress, this has been a concerted effort to subvert the will of the people by overturning a legal election, and an resurrection to over through the duly elected government of the United States with added bonus of death and destruction and I doubt we have seen the last of it either.
