Although, to be honest, Iliana seems to be building her own interests without my help, and is more excited about owls than spiders. And that’s fine. We’ve just got to grow that interest in the world around us.

    Ha! A couple of years ago, I lived for a year in a very old cabin in very rural California (and served as a superintendent/principal of a small school district). I’d estimate that I shared my space with hundreds and hundreds of spiders. At least. I didn’t worry about flies.

    Since flies generally are vectors for more pathogens than spiders, this will be good for her health.

    ….And if she can develop a working symbiosis with venomous arachnids , she will be safe from muggers when she grows up. Advantages all the way.

    -are there any particularly evil, cunning owls? Like, the avian analogs of honey badgers.

    When my daughter was four, she wanted to dress as a “scary spider” for Halloween. We cheerfully obliged, stuffing two long styrofoam pool noodles into black tights for the extra arms.

    The funniest part was the reaction of the moms of all her princess and fairly classmates: “You LET your daughter dress as a SPIDER?”

    I guess it wasn’t funny — it was sad.
