Course Design: Behold! A Syllabus!

squaredaway

Wow. I think I’m ready to go. I’ve put the Biol 4182 EcoDevo syllabus together, I’ve got the courseware (we use Moodle) site ready to go, and I’ve put together the notes for the first week’s lectures/discussions, and now I just have to upload that syllabus and make it available to all the students…and then watch the course withdrawals come flooding in.

No! They’re going to appreciate it! We’re going to learn so much together this term!

Classes start a week from today. I’m more prepared than usual.

    Nice syllabus!
I wish I had received one as detailed as this, even one time.
My only question: an ORAL midterm? How does that work?

They meet me in my office for a half hour. I have a long list of questions. I grill them and see how well they do.

It’s also an opportunity to get some one-on-one feedback.

I’d like to see an explicit description of your grading policy for when a student comes in and demolishes your godless Evolutionary Doctrine and causes you to dedicate your life to Jesus.

PZ, are you happy working with Moodle? I have only looked at it (briefly) for a project which later got suspended for other reasons. If it ever restarts again I may revisit Moodle, also. But I am not sure if I like it. From my short and superficial experience it seemed quite unwieldy.

I’m genuinely stumpted as to whether #3 is tongue-in-cheek or genuine… good ol’ Poe’s Law affirmed again!

I just assume they mean it these days. 2016 was a step by step destruction of Poe’s law.

Olav, I use Moodle in my course. It’s okay, though a little idiosyncratic. Though I will point out that I’m a student and not a lecturer.

Moodle’s OK. I don’t do anything fancy with it: it’s basically a weekly calendar that I stuff with the appropriate readings and assignments and notes.

I”ll ask, even though I already think I know the answer. Any chance you could record the class and post the videos?? I’ll bet alot of readers would enjoy following this class, from its absolute beginning to the final exam. I realize you probably couldnt post the student presentations.

The class is going to involve a lot of participation by the students, so no, videotaping for public consumption would raise some privacy concerns.
