There is no god, no karma, no justice of any kind inherent to this universe. So somehow I’m going to have to take my sorrow, and my anger, and use it to help keep this from happening again. Fucked if I know what exactly. I live in rural Australia where the homophobia is kept out of sight for the most part. It gives the illusion that things are better here, sure, but that lack of visibility also means it’s hard to find a place to start. I think I’m going to go ask the principal of our local school if there’s any resources available for LBGT kids. It’s a tiny place so I suspect not, but you never know. They’ve surprised me before with how progressive they are.

it is a sad and pointless act and no mistake my emotions are getting pretty tired of all of this kind of stuff it is getting hard to feel the events any more.
the only other thing I can say may sound harsh and uncaring but I am glad to see the face of hate branded in the street with the vileness of its acts. There are many who would not speak up nor really disagree with the motivation of bigotry but are “fellow travelers” as they say everyone knows some I sure do. so bring them out of the shadows into the light of the public spaces. you can’t fight what your can’t see. it is better than fighting the polite dog whistles and mealy mouthed heapocraps
and all them talking heads in Armani suits, silk ties and club rings!

Note how many of them were Latino/a. And their deaths will now be used by Trump and even by Clinton to justify anti-immigrant prejudices. Because that’s what “we” (the US people in general) are demanding: that the scary foreigners be kept out. Never mind that the shooter was US born and raised and that the prejudices he displayed were US in origin.

If this is true, could this be ultimately the result of religiously induced self-hatred? Adhering to a religion that was so in conflict with who he actually was that he snapped? I’m not making excuses for the guy, there are none. However this may be deeper than religiously induced homophobia, there may be a religiously induced layer of self-loathing as well.

I think it is possible that he was trolling for victims or scoping out the club for future violent acts. The reports may be an attempt to demonize him as “one of those icky gays who killed his own”. There has been no one to come forward as of yet that has confirmed a same-sex intimate encounter with him. So I would be careful about assumptions that he was gay.

Not necessarily. Think back to Elliot Rodger and the Santa Barbara shooting.
If you simply substitute unsuccessful approaches (though Rodger made none) to desired sexual partners from a heterosexual to a homosexual setting they look like parallels. Rodger sitting alone in his car sulking and fuming because women weren’t throwing themselves at him versus Mateen sitting alone in a corner of a gay bar for hours on end. Rodger throwing coffee at women talking among themselves versus Mateen getting drunk and belligerent in the bar while surrounded by gay men. Both of them eventually shooting as many people as possible in those same environments.
There’ll be details and complexities differentiating them. But possibly not so many that the parallels are irrelevant.
