I was at the MBA in January, and the guide in the cephalopod exhibit said they had had a Giant Octopus that figured out how to hide in the fake rocks so well that the staff assumed it had escaped. Then, weeks later someone was cleaning the tank, or something, and this starving octopus suddenly appears and tries to kill one of the lemon sharks. The staff member had to use all his strength to pull off the octopus and save the poor shark. Then he tossed in buckets full of crab for the octopus to eat and leave the rest of the exhibit specimens alone. No one knows why the octopus wanted to hide so badly that it starved itself.

@ #3 There is the part where some octopus females stand watch over their eggs in a hidden nook and starve the whole time. To further speculate, the shark may have been considered a threat to the eggs and wasn’t actually her break fast.

Somewhat less known is the endangered Pacific tree octopus.
I always feel sorry for cephalopods because they are obviously intelligent yet their lifespans are so short.
