After that last post, here’s a little palate cleanser: Ocean Atlas, an underwater sculpture of a Bahamian girl supporting the weight of the ocean, by Jason deCaires Taylor.
One of the loveliest things about it is that it’s going to get more attractive over time: it’s made of a pH-neutral cement that makes a good home for reef organisms, so it’s going to get gradually encrusted with life. See the link above for more examples of his work.
How about “Atlas Unchained”?
In a few years Ocean Atlas will be a reef. Cool!
Brilliant, beautiful, creative, enticing… I could go all the way to Z with adjectives but the art speaks for itself. It makes me wish I could swim or dive (terrified of water that isn’t far enough away to look at while dry).
such a pretty smile

That is very cool, although I would have chiseled off the mold seam marks if I were the sculptor.
Beautiful!
Al Dente @ 2:
Did you click the link? He has hundreds of sculptures underwater, with a lot of images of reef formation happening.
I don’t see any tentacles.
I was trying to find a location, I would love to make my next SCUBA destination where these are. The best I could find was one photo suggesting it was in Cancun. I don’t know if they are all there or not.
Beautiful work!
Iyeska @5
I looked at the sculptures in the link. They’re all becoming reefs. Still cool!
Crimson Clupeidae @ 7 you can try his wiki page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jason_deCaires_Taylor. It lists his sculptures and their location.
Watching the anime ‘Attack on Titan’ at the moment, which makes this a bit disturbing.
Nobody else? Do I have to say it? -What if the statue reads Ayn Rand? The ocean could collapse!
Wouldn’t it need to be slightly bigger to support the ocean?
That statue’s faking it.
Martin@9: Cheers for that. A couple of those places are already on my SCUBA bucket list. Have to add a few more now. :)
doublepluscool this. i’d love to see more artists doing this sort of thing.
