Let’s talk. I’ve just gotten home from a couple of conferences, so maybe we could discuss the recent disgruntlement emerging from Women in Secularism 2, or how the humanists at the IHEU seem to be mostly doing it right. We also have Empowering Women Through Secularism coming up in late June in Dublin — anyone else going? What are your expectations? Or if there’s something else you consider important, sure, bring it up. This is to be a casual conversation between pals over my morning tea.
If you’ve already participated in one of these, I’ve already got your name in a circle and you’ll get an invite — if not, email me your Google+ ID so I can add you.

If you think I can say anything useful on those topics, I’ll try to get a G+ account till then. The time is perfect :-)

Could some resources be pointed to or drawn up that specifically illustrates why further empowerment of women is necessary. When rights for women, or discrimination are the topic online, it’s always in vague nebulous concepts “women are disenfranchised” or “feminism lies” or “women are excluded from..” or “women have more power than men”.
Can an easy to reference data sheet be drawn up for easy and quick references? What are women under-represented in? What are women overrepresented in, as a bad thing? By how much? Maybe a note in prevailing theories as to why (which will tell you what needs to be done to fix it).
Maybe one for the US specifically, and one for the world as a whole.

On the news 2 days ago: here in Berlin, women make 15 % less than men for the same work; the nationwide average is 22 %.

Yeah, for a change I thought I’d pick an hour that would be convenient for our European brothers and sisters.
poolboy, one of the things Michael Nugent often tries to do at these events is generate something concrete, a clear statement of the conclusions of the conference. I think that’s what we’ll get out of EWTS.
David Marjanović says
OK, I’ll try. :-)

I’m afraid I can’t make this one – too early in the morning when I’m keeping astronomer’s hours. My loss.
Ophelia Benson says
I wanna do that.
PZ Myers says
OK, 8am your time, Ophelia!

I think I might like to try, but I’ve never done a Hangout before. It seems rather intimidating (the logistics, not the speaking part).
Jadehawk says
oh memememe invite me

i even promise to try to be awake and coherent at that horrifyingly early hour.
Usernames are smart says
Will you be broadcasting this “on air”?
Quirkythrope says
Hey, I’m awake, why the hell not?
David Marjanović says
Just to confirm I’m on the new computer with webcam and all, and on G+. Making belated dinner (as in “breakfast, dinner, supper”, not “breakfast, lunch, dinner”).

I was once, prior to my trying to usurp divine rule of what is now (then TZT) the Thunderdome.¹

¹ [Far more likely scenario: There is a small technical hitch. (I would have to recuse myself in any case – for being ill qualified for the topic at hand. I was, however, hoping to follow the conversation, particularly as Ophelia was going to contribute.)]
