I am beginning to lose track of where and when I am — I woke up this morning and it took a while to puzzle out exactly why I was in this hotel room. We did have a fun time with the UC Santa Cruz Secular Student Alliance and the Secular Humanists of Santa Cruz County with a packed room and another long night of discussion. Besides, the sun has finally come out, I got to see redwoods and surfers, and it actually looks like California for a change, instead of Seattle.
Today I’m heading off to Cupertino and De Anza College, speaking in De Anza College Forum 1 at 2pm. Note the earlier time; I think we’re hoping to get the crowd just coming off their Sunday church lunch. It may also mean I can get to bed at a reasonable hour tonight, because I’m feeling the lack of sleep piling up in my head.

oooh, I used to go to De Anza. Awesome College. Only part of California I can honestly say I miss :-)

Nah, that’s just Santa Cruz. It’s a well-known danger of the area. Hotels are not needed. Nor is beer and wine, albeit they are said to enhance the effect. So does coffee, I’ll guess, judging by the number of cafe’s there…

Great talk last night, PZ!

Such a great straight line. I should sacrifice a virgin gerbil to the God of Straight Lines for this gift. But I’ll be nice and not make any of the obvious comments.

You’re on Earth, third planet from the Sun, and it’s the 34th day since the winter solstice on the northern hemisphere.
As to the blonde lying next to you, ask her.
Glad to be of help, don’t mention it.

blf(@#2): you have left out several of the local substances of choice!
PZed’s Road Blues:

Woke up this morning; said it took a while! to puzzle out exactly why I was in this-hyah hotel room.
And then it hit me like a ton a bricks:
On the road; be feelin’ the precise same way again real, real soon.
(lawd have mercy)

The Sacramento region is within reasonable travel time for me. I made it to Davis and I hope to drop in at the Sacramento event.
Hey, PZ, have you seen the nice poster for your Sacramento City College talk? Good work by the Sac City Freethinkers!
No octopus art, though.

Hell, I’ve had that problem with roadside ditches.

Required listening for a visit to De Anza College: De Anza Jig by Primus.

…giggles… That wasn’t and isn’t my thing, even when I lived in the area, so it’s perhaps not too surprising I forgot. On the other hand, since I did and still do look something like a hippy who is familiar with soap but not a razor, I was constantly being asked…

Any details for the Chico talk tomorrow night? I haven’t been able to get any info out of the Chico SSA, and there are quite a few of us skeptics / atheists / fans here in Chico who don’t happen to be students but who really want to hear you talk and buy you beer (Hopefully we can at least meet up at Sierra Nevada after your talk)

Brace yourself, PZ. It is really cold in Sac right now.
I know that 50 doesn’t seem that cold to someone from Minnesota, but actually, I’ve kind of wondered if it does. It’s rainy and windy, too.
Do people from Minnesota get off the plane in Sacramento, where they’re hit with 50 degrees, wind and rain, and say, “Ahhh, warm weather at last!”, or do they button up their coats?
I’ve been to Tahoe when it’s 10 degrees, blowing about 30 knots, and is snowing horizontally. That is really uncomfortable. I hate chaining up when it’s like that.
Looking forward to Tuesday.

Well Stanford is Wednesday and PZ will be bracketed by Dr. Ard Louis,
“Can Science Explain Everything?”, in a Veritas Forum talk on Tuesday and a certain church from Topeka, Kansas on Friday (the last was not invited).

According to the student group at Sierra College, PZ’s appearance in Rocklin on Thursday evening will be in the college’s W110 lecture hall from 7:00 to 9:00.

If you looked around that was me in the speedo, spread out on the deck chair, sipping the mai tai and enjoying the balmy weather.

Ok, the Chico Secular Student Alliance finally has details for PZ’s visit. They are calling it Dinner with PZ, and it will be at the Graduate from 4:00 until 7:00 PM.
The event page is http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=267566332793&ref=mf
I’m hoping PZ’s up for something later after the dinner, because I’m willing to buy him drinks / food at Sierra Nevada.

Wish I could have made it to the UCSC lecture, but ended up in SF for a show :(. Hope you enjoyed our city!

Thanks PZ for a great evening in Santa Cruz. I got some great video of the occasion.
In the News today: MOSCOW – More than 100 Russian Orthodox believers have been hospitalized after drinking holy water during Epiphany celebrations in the eastern city of Irkutsk, an official said Monday.
A total of 117 people, including 48 children, were in the hospital complaining of acute intestinal pain after drinking water from wells in and around a local church last week, said Vladimir Salovarov, a spokesman for the Irkutsk Investigative Committee.
Salovarov said 204 people required some medical treatment after consuming the water, the source of which was a stagnant lake. He said, however, that it was too early to say what caused the illness.
Many Russians consider any water obtained on Epiphany — which they celebrate on Jan. 19 — to be holy.
The water is typically bottled for consumption later. Tap water in most of Russia is undrinkable.
