We had a great time at Wynkoop’s tonight, although I noticed that the other attendees at our Pharyngufest were fading out at 10:00 — I had to mention to quite a few people that they had no stamina at all.
Although the fact that they started drinking at 5pm and Wynkoop’s has a marvelous assortment of microbrews might have had something to do with it. Truth be told, I was starting to feel a little woozy myself. Anyway, if you weren’t there, too bad. Here’s a little panarama of the crowd.
It turned out that Wynkoop’s was an excellent venue for another reason: check out this amazing mural that was hanging there. I think it’s something from Ray Troll.

10h (10am) could, perhaps, be a prudent time to stop drinking if you’ve been at it since 17h (5pm). At the very least, by then you’d probably need to visit the toilet…

I meant to tell you, another fellow who showed up confirmed that the art was by Ray Troll, so your instincts were right on. For those who weren’t there, the caption on the piece is “An artist’s view of THE FAMILY TREE with a ratfish bias.” Mammals occupy a small branch in the upper right; cephalopods are prominently displayed toward the top center.
Thanks for an evening filled with good beer, new faces, and heavy-duty discussions of all manner of science — a young gentleman who’d come down from Wyoming engaged me in talk of cosmology, Hawking radiation, evaporating black holes, and comparative planetary geology…

Ah well, I enjoyed more than a few of the Wynkoop’s fine brews in amusing company over my years in Denver, so I suppose I shouldn’t complain. If Pharyngulites ever gather in Georgia, I’ll be there!

What do you think would be a good venue for a Pharyngulite Fest? I live way north of the city, & am not familiar with the downtown watering holes.
GECCO 2008 is certainly the right sort of science nerd gathering, but The Tentacled Master Himself is not scheduled to attend, so I can’t see canceling on my other plans for the weekend just to arrange a last-minute bit of pharyngering (which is like malingering, but with smarter conversation).
As for Atlanta watering holes, I’m afraid I’m not too familiar with them myself: I live in Athens.

That’s what I get for getting behind on my reading, especially when I could have learned about the meet-up from two separate lists! Though I probably would have been one who was fading fast at 10pm, I’m still on Eastern time. In any case, I really enjoyed your talk today on the evolution of eyes. (Dare I say it was eye-opening?)

I had a great time. PZ Myers has provided us with so much news, education, and entertainment every day and free of charge, that buying his drinks for a night is the least we could do. I hope we get the chance to do it again some time.
It’s not a typical social situation when celebrities meet their fans, and can be mutually uncomfortable. I don’t think you can necessarily judge someone’s “arrogance” based on such an interaction. PZ seemed to loosen up progressively as the night went on, as we all did with some “social lubricant.”
Umm, “Clarissa” is the Kansas troll, and “her” comment is about to go away.
And I’ll have you know, I will too be at GECCO! I’m giving one of the keynotes, at 8:30 on Tuesday, 15 July, and I’ll be in Atlanta for the whole week.
