The things that remind people of me…

They all seem to be demonic, or tentacled, or both. I am always flattered to get the email from people saying, “I found this stinking pile of slime covered with maggots, and I thought immediately of you!” (really, I am flattered—it’s nice to be associated with the weird and unusual.) However, I have to assure you that I don’t actually look anything like this handsome hunk of tentacles, although you’ll have to take my word on it—you won’t find any photos of me sans clothing to confirm that.

Also, my wife doesn’t look anything like this sexy spawn of Cthulhu*. She’s much hotter, even if she lacks a chitinous crust or suckers.

*Warning: that link is to a page with photographs of a “nude” model, but she is sort of clothed in spikes and shells and other oddments. Links from that page are not really work safe—they get weirder, but much more overtly mammalian.

The style of the statue also brings the works of H.R. Giger to mind, not just H.P. Lovecraft.

The description of the linked Tentacle Hunk as based on “Call of the Cthulhu” is stretching things quite a bit I think. H.P. described Him as follows:

It represented a monster of vaguely anthropoid outline, but with an octopus-like head whose face was a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind. This thing, which seemed instinct with a fearsome and unnatural malignancy, was of a somewhat bloated corpulence.

Far be it for me to complain about the callgirl of cthulhu though. :D

Speaking of things that remind us of you… Last night The Colbert Report did a segment on The War on Easter. And this comic made me think of you.

I have to say — and I mean no disrespect, Pharyngula — that this mega-statue of some guy with extra tentacles (Doc Ock, call your lawyer) doesn’t resemble in the slightest the Unspeakable Horror that is Cthulhu, at least not in my fevered Lovecraftian imagination.

Now some of those real cool underwater creatures that we’re only now beginning to discover — those are Cthulhu-esque! I doubt even H.P could have imagined their odd appearances.

The Centauri (Babylon 5) have tentacles that emerge from their backs. (They’re used for reproductive purposes only!)

And what about the alien in the Species series? Also has gratuitous T&A!!! Does it get any better???

I find it sad that a rabid immoral atheist like you would need to put a “nudity” disclaimer in for a freaking statue. What’s next, kelp leaves?

It is generally considered polite to put up a warning if linking to pictures that might cause comment if your boss/librarian/DHS Thug happens to look over your shoulder. (especially if you don’t have a habit of having that sort of thing on your front page)

That wasn’t a nudity disclaimer. It’s because this site draws in kinky amoral atheists, you know, and the sight of that figure might cause many of them to run out and rape a cephalopod. It’s for the safety of the invertebrates, don’t you know.

… and did you notice the sculptor who made the callgirl of Cthulhu was a Christian? :-)

You COULD always have someone take a photo of you sans clothing and post it to the web so we can determine this for ourselves…
