California governor Gavin Newsom has announced that California will be producing its own insulin. This hasn’t been done, yet, but apparently Newsom has committed to spending $100,000,000, split evenly between building new insulin manufacturing facilities, and “the development of low-cost insulin products”. This is good. This could be the crack in the dam that ends the hostage situation pharmaceutical corporations currently have with people whose lives depend on medication.

either that or it’ll just make it cheaper to source while leaving the price totally unchanged, enriching some of newsom’s billionaire friends in cali. this man was shameless in intervening on behalf of a corporation faced with unionization and prosecution for rampant sexual harassment recently. but who can say? maybe he has principles on fridays and not on tuesdays or something.

A citation on that. The article takes pains to be neutral and it shakes out a bit generous – I see no reason to give a benefit of a doubt in this case, given the facts.

A fair point as always.
I’m gonna take the Hopeium hit for now, though, and add in the qualifier “more, faster, harder”.
The announcement is good. Following through would be better.
NOT following through gives activists some leverage and tools for radicalizing people.

Other sources I’ve read are very clear that the insulin will be sold at just above the cost-to-manufacture (which is typically about $5/vial). Yes, let’s be happy about this. Gov Newsom will positively impact the lives of millions of working people. My governor tanked public transit and made it impossible to cross any of our many bridges without giving a credit card number to a third party to administer and carry around a transponder that can track the car.

Well, and the folks in the MR video discuss how he’s likely to go through with this not because he gives a shit about people, but because of his calculation about how to stay in power.
It’s how the system is SUPPOSED to exploit the self-interest of those with a will to power, and every once in a while it works.

If California seceded from the rest of the USA, they’d have everything they need to be successful. Industry, farming, bio-med, high-tech, IT, entertainment…the list goes on and on. Even better, they’d get to keep the $$$$ they send to the regressive states.
Now they’re providing their people affordable insulin, too, in addition to ensuring all the population’s rights to make their own decisions about what happens to their body.
Abe Drayton says
I certainly hope they go ahead with this, and I hope that they start letting people in other states order from them for the same price plus shipping (or just free shipping)
