Let me just round up where we are in this country right now…
Let’s start with the fact that a Texas mosque went up in flames right after Agent Orange signed an executive order restricting migration from Muslim countries.
Then you should know that racist and anti-Semite Steve Bannon is now on the National Security Council.
As a reminder, the Dakota Access and Keystone XL Pipelines are now going ahead.
Also as a reminder, “progressive heroes” Elizabeth Warren and Sherrod Brown voted to approve Ben Carson for HUD secretary.
Oh! And another reminder! Our Cheeto-In-Chief has decided to start publishing a weekly list of crimes committed by immigrants.
And again… he wants to build actual fucking concentration camps.
But you’re pissed because a Nazi got punched in the face?
PUNCH ALL THE FUCKING NAZIS IN THEIR FUCKING FACES!!!!!!!!!!!! LET’S DO IT ONCE A WEEK, ON SATURDAY, THE JEWISH SABBATH!!!!!!!!!!!!! FUCKING PUNCH THE FUCK OUT OF EVERY FUCKING NAZI WE EVER FUCKING MEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FUCK THEM ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PUNCH THEM ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!

I ADVOCATE PUNCHING FUCKING NAZIS!!!!!!!!!!!!
I ADVOCATE PUNCHING FUCKING NAZIS!!!!!!!!!!!!
I ADVOCATE PUNCHING FUCKING NAZIS!!!!!!!!!!!!
I ADVOCATE PUNCHING FUCKING NAZIS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay.
I’m sorry. That was too much.
I do not advocate punching anyone in the face.
Let me repeat that.
I do not advocate punching anyone in the face.
But I am fucking livid, and I’m sick and fucking tired of left-wing/progressive hand-wringing over self-defense. I never, ever, see any of you yelling at Nazis. You only ever whine at those who are defending themselves. And, in case I need to spell it out, yes, I do see punching Nazis as self-defense, in the exact same way I view that preacher getting whacked over the head with a baseball bat because he was yelling at high school girls that they deserve to be raped to be self-defense. I really don’t care the context or who threw the punch, either.
Because the person on the receiving end of the fist was a Nazi – a group who, need I remind you, advocates for, and once very nearly succeeded in, total genocide of multiple groups of people – as far as I’m concerned, it will always be self-defense. Without exception.
What the Tiny-Handed Orange Fascist-In-Chief and his bigoted supporters are doing is infinitely worse than punching a Nazi in the face. So please… I’m begging you…
Get some fucking perspective. Stop wringing your fucking hands over a Nazi getting punched in the face.
Just fucking stop.
Oh… and to respond to a comment on my post about Richard Spencer getting punched in the face…
If you’re willing to punch a Nazi in the face, you should be willing use a baseball bat. If you’re willing to use a baseball bat you should be willing to use a gun. And if you’re willing to use a gun — and remember, we’re talking about a guy standing in the street giving an interview — then go fuck yourself, you’re no friend of liberals or progressives.
Well then “Progressives” can go fuck themselves sideways into the ocean with a cactus.
Caine says
Whoever wrote that, go fuck yourself, cupcake. I’ll be damned if I’m gonna be carted off quietly, fuckyouverymuch. Before long, you’ll find yourself helpfully stuffing people into camps and opening the damn oven door.
No quarter for nazis. They set the world on fire once, I’m not too fucking keen on it happening again.
Marcus Ranum says
If the nazis are worried about getting punched in the face, they ought to think that -- if they carry their stated plans far enough (deportations, etc) some of us are going to start shooting them. I, for one.
Marcus Ranum says
you should be willing to use a gun
Have gun, will travel. Better yet, nazis: come to me. Pennsylvania has a stand your ground law and my neighbor has a backhoe I can use.
Nathan says
See… I’m torn on that, Marcus.
While I admit a sort of morbid fascination with guns, I also hate them. And I just can’t ever suggest outright killing someone.
And yet again… these are Nazis, and this is self defense.
I don’t know. Personally, I’m gonna say… if you can do it, use your fists instead. Avoid the extra weapons. But that’s for me.
When it comes to violence these days, I am definitely feeling less MLK and more Malcolm X. And, admittedly, it kind of scares me. Like… I actually abhor violence. I am genuinely a pacifist. Even when it’s a last resort, I personally can’t feel good about war, about riots, and all that.
Yet I’m starting to feel like we’ve reached the last resort.
No matter how fucking hard some privileged white progressives are trying to just be all “no! It’s bad! Instead we can compromise!”… I don’t know that we can, anymore. I don’t see peace working, at all.
I’m really starting to think that violence is all that’s left.
And… I don’t know how I feel about that…

I’ll just leave this here….

Caine says
I’m not a gun person. Hate the things. I do, however, have a house full of sharp pointy items. I favour them. I don’t advocate starting violence, but it may well be unavoidable. If it comes to the defense of myself or other persons, I won’t hesitate. And no, I’m not just saying. I’ve had to defend myself before.
Nathan says
@Caine
Now sharp pointy things are cool. Admittedly, I became attracted to sharp pointy things back when I was suicidal, but my attraction to them, weirdly, was also part of my healing from that. When I can afford it, I very much want to collect swords, knives, daggers, stars, etc. I’m less against using those than I am guns because…
Well…
When using a gun, you’re sort of hiding behind them. This isn’t true for all who use guns (I wouldn’t classify you, Marcus, as a coward at all; in fact, just based on your posts, I think you’re a pretty brave person), but I do think a lot of people who use guns are cowards (fuck… just look at the US police force) who use guns to stay as far away from who they fear as possible.
But… over all? Yeah. Self defense is the reason. We shouldn’t start the violence, but we didn’t start the violence. Patriarchal White Supremacy started the violence. Nazis started the violence. Bannon started the violence. Trump started the violence. Resistance is always self defense. If resistance gets violent, it is, by definition, self defense.
So…
Nathan says
And thank you for that, Intransitive. I never heard that. I’m glad now that I have. Thank you for introducing that to me.
Dunc says
Last time I saw that “punch = baseball bat = gun” style of argument, it was from a Libertarian arguing that taxation was equivalent to slavery. It was just as dumb then.

Equally and sadly á propos is Pop Will Eat Itself’s “Ich Bin Ein Auslander”, about Germany in 1992. It’s a fan made video of a few months ago, not the original:

I thought you were going to link to “The Untouchables”.
This appeared in your link. I couldn’t help but laugh.
Marcus Ranum says
Nathan@#4:
Violence is not just a way of resolving a specific problem.
It is a means of communicating.
When you punch a nazi, you probably haven’t changed that nazi’s mind much. But when you punch them in front of their friends, you’ve possibly given them a little something to think about, too.
Marcus Ranum says
I do think a lot of people who use guns are cowards (fuck… just look at the US police force) who use guns to stay as far away from who they fear as possible
I don’t think it’s got much to do with the weapon, really. They’re cops because they’re cowards, not the other way around. Yes, the snipers looking at unarmed protesters through their scopes -- they’re cowards. The cops in body armor against bare flesh -- they’re cowards.
My problem with the use of force is that it only makes sense if you can make it horribly disproportional. Otherwise, you’ve got, what, democracy? Because if you’re evenly matched and it’s an interesting fight, then you’re playing for sport, not there to win.
After carrying one katana or another since I got my first in 1978, I’m probably handier with a sword than a gun. And I’m quite handy with a gun. What bugs me about these stupid fascists is that they assume that because they can rock a brown shirt that they’re scary badasses. I bet they bleed the same color everyone else does; it’s funny how that works. They don’t seem to realize that, though.

It was that SilentBob person whose post you interpreted correctly on your blog and I misinterpreted with foolish generosity.
Also, why the hell would I want to be a friend of liberals or progressives? It should be the other way around. Liberals and progressives should be looking to be allies of the groups who are being targeted. What a self-centered asshole thing to say. They think punching Nazis is about getting the nod of approval from liberals. LO fucking L.
Jessie Harban says
I’m mad because a Nazi merely got punched in the face.
We used to kill Nazis on sight. There was a time when merely being a Nazi was considered a major felony that people were tried and hanged for. Have we really fallen so far that a single Nazi getting a single punch is a cause for celebration?
Marcus Ranum says
By the way -- remember when Trump offered to pay that guy’s legal bills who punched the protester?
Never mind that Trump probably figured out a way of reneging on that promise, since it involves money, it set an interesting precedent. Imagine the yelling if someone started a “punch a nazi” fund.
sonofrojblake says
Amen. Take a knife to a fistfight. Take a gun to a knife-fight. Take a tank to a gunfight. Mozambique Drill for Nazis, it’s the only language they understand.
=8)-DX says
I for one, remember all those heroic WW2 stories which included our manly heroes and heroines tricking and murdering Nazis to save Jews or disabled people or politically at-risk individuals.
Jessie Foster says
What about communists? My grandparents lived under Mao’s China. They were firsthand witnesses to the devastation there. Is it self defense if I punch/stab/shoot any Marxist college students I may come across?
I understand the response here. It was satisfying to see Spencer get punched in the face. But it wasn’t self defense. If the puncher had ignored Spencer nothing would’ve happened.
Holms says
Sorry? What? Fallen so far, because we no longer kill politically awful people? Amazing.
Rob Grigjanis says
Jessie Foster @19: And my grandad and other relatives were imprisoned in gulags for years. That’s not an indictment of communism. Marxism is not inherently racist. Nazism is.
Jessie Foster says
@Rob
An ideology is partly defined by the actions of those who follow it. The fact that your relatives were imprisoned in gulags is absolutely an indictment of communism.
And…? You know that something can be bad without being racist, right? Not all bad things are racist.
lorn says
‘War is politics by other means’.
Slight corrections early largely eliminate the need for larger, and often more violent corrections, later. No need to shoot Hitler in 1938. A dope-slap and telling him he is nuts about his racial and ethnic ideas in 1920 would have had the same effect.
A few choice words to this nazi would have done the trick twenty years ago. Now it takes a punch to get his attention. I suspect that even that level of violence is not going to give cause him to dig deep enough to get back to his original fault.
Rob Grigjanis says
Jessie @22: Ah, so Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, the slymepit, etc. are absolutely an indictment of atheism. Glad we got that straightened out.
Jessie Foster says
@Rob
Atheism isn’t an ideology, which is a set of beliefs. It isn’t even a belief. It’s the absence of a belief.
Rob Grigjanis says
Jessie @25: You can have that argument with PZ, but the point is that terms like ‘communism’, ‘capitalism’, ‘socialism’, ‘atheism’ etc are all far too vague to be blanket-condemned (or blanket-praised!) by particular examples.
Saad says
Jessie Foster, #22
I was about to reply to all of your post, but then I remembered you’re another one of the regular shit-for-brains assholes of FtB. I’ll go do something else instead.
Jessie Foster says
@Saad
Aw, too bad. Your commentary is usually so insightful. What a fucking terrible loss. I would’ve just loved to defend myself from the accusation that I was being racist towards the communists.
Buh-bye!
rq says
Fuck you, Jessie Foster.

Themselves? Dude, what’s happened to your Macho? Just punch them in the fucking face. That’s how it’s done, yeah? You rock, Bro.
