Last night’s UK election in which the now unabashedly cruel and inhumane Tories won a clear majority for the first time in ages was disturbing and depressing. Odgraphix described it as “Higaldy-Pigaldy”, which reminded me of the double dactyl style of poetry since those start with a nonsense line, often literally “Higgledy-Piggledy”. So I think I’ll post such things from time to time on current topics, cuttlewise, and start with this one.

Now the UK has a
Definite path ahead:
Brexit comes off
All due to racists
Electing a thoroughly
Authoritarian
Cold-blooded toff.

Interesting. I’d been unfamiliar with double dactyl (though obviously I’m familiar with dactyl as a foot-form, like anapest, etc.). I’m interested to see what you’ll do with this going forward and whether your poems develop their own shared vocabulary and in jokes, etc.

That would certainly be nice! Ah, but one needs a community for that, a commentariat, and I have no idea how one is supposed to get one of those. Though, I reckon PZ’s example shows how it’s hard to get rid of them too, since we all go there despite the ongoing ‘FULL OF SPIDERS’ issue… XD

Points for using “toff!”

I think a commentariat takes time to develop, and needs reasonably regular postings to do so, which is a bit of a pain for you, posting into the apparent void before it develops
Jazzlet says
Oh and I think I’m in shock about the result, I can’t really grasp the horror of what it will mean at the moment.
PZ Myers says
“FULL OF SPIDERS” is infinitely preferable to “FULL OF FASCISTS”, you know.

I love double dactyls, and I’ll be reading your blog (even if I don’t comment a lot). You seem off to a good start!

Yeah, Jazzlet is right – both about the commentariat development and Brexit. I think Jeremy Corbyn like Australia’s former opposition leader Bill Shorten, like Hillary Clinton, like former Aussie PM Julia Gillard was demoinised by a long Murdoch campaign of smearing, misinfo, exxagerations, rumours and narrative framing.
First time I’ve seen your blog Abbey St. Brendan. Thanks and wishing you good luck.

Thanks, folks. I mean, I know it’s a time and effort thing; I’m just a bit insecure and prone to a certain amount of recreational whining. It hasn’t been a week yet, and I am feeling no urge to stop! The encouragement is very much appreciated.

Your double dactyl poem is interesting, and I think you’re off to a great start. I don’t always comment. but I read everything posted at FTB. Your commentariat will grow with time.
