We’re all sick. My mother-in-law brought home some wacky virus or other, which naturally is hitting my husband the worst, because they always do. As I compose it’s only 5:49 in the evening (black night this time of year at this latitude) and after eating some thanksgiving themed gruel, he’s gone back to sleep again. At least there’s no wheezing. They say rest is supposed to be good for sickness, right?
MiL cooked the gruel tho, and I said thanks to her for that. Wish she’d ever wear a mask.
I’ve been thinking about how much of a social outlier you have to be to wear a mask these days. Practically nobody does it. That makes it a conformity thing, I think. There is no way the vast majority of the population in a blue state feels easy-breezy-indestructible about disease and/or nihilistic enough to not care who suffers or dies for unnecessary transmissions. Some of these people would do it, if they weren’t afraid of looking like a freak.
So when you see somebody wearing a mask properly, understand that person is either a cowardy custard whose germophobia exceeds their social fear, or they are a person so fucken cool they genuinely don’t give a fuck what other people think about them – mostly the latter. Props either way, because vulnerable people like my husband don’t deserve this shit. I wish his mom wasn’t a slave to conformity.
After a few hours of interruption, back to finish the article up. He woke to eat two bites of pumpkin pie and went back to sleep. Snoring again. At least that’s breathing.

Are you waiting for anyone to tell you to get a COVID check?
everybody’s vaxed and breathing easily enough without dangerously high fevers, so the worst possible outcomes for covid are unlikely. if that is what it is, i’d like my dude to get some paxlovid in him, but the way the wheels move, he’ll be done being sick by the time the rx is filled.
OK. Had to be said, but. In case.
Get better.
Concur with John: Covid test with the added incentive that you can get the tests free at some public health offices and senior centers (your MIL qualifies, I would guess?). At least, you can get the tests free at those places in my state–your mileage may vary so check before you go.
Also: there’s a fun new variant of the flu out there that this year’s flu shot didn’t address. And there’s bird flu, which seems to be crossing over to people more and more. And the common cold, which changes often enough that there will never be a vaccine. I’m hoping for your family’s sake that it’s just a run-of-the-mill cold and everyone will feel better soon.
Finally: you left out the whole class of people who are dealing with their own health issues (cancer treatments, autoimmune issues, etc.) and therefore still wear a mask. I was recently at a wedding where about 1 out of 5 guests were masked. A couple of the clerks at my local mom & pop supermarket still wear masks, I’ve seen masked workers at the larger local chain of supermarkets and at Costco.
I hope he get better jolly soon.
i had thought of the unmentioned category shortly after posting but didn’t feel like editing it in. hey, u did the work for me down here, haha.
my dude’s fever is down from 99.2 to 98.1 or thereabouts, so creepin down. his baseline is more like 97.somethin.
fevers down to 97.8, i think his norm is 97.4. huzzah!
5,850 words today, best of the month, caught up almost to par, should make word count on last day less of a nightmare. pretty funny i will have spent the entire month under par, just squeaking out at the last minute.
