Because Romney was other than splendid
Rick Santorum (just barely) contended
But the biggest “Not Mitt”
Is now calling it quits—
Though not really—it’s only “suspended”
Headline: Santorum Suspends Run For President
Remember, if it’s only “suspended”, he can still do fundraising, and be eligible for matching funds. Once he quits for good, that dries up.

He should also be commended for the millions of dollars he siphoned from Romney and his super-pacs, which could have been spent in broader, rather than more specific, lies.

Why do I have the horrible suspicion that we haven’t seen the last of this vile bigot?
'Tis Himself says
I’m sure we haven’t seen the last of him. He was defeated in his last senatorial race but that didn’t stop him from running for president.

Oh you Americans are so funny. Center left? US center left is center-tending right to us uropeaneans. =P
Trebuchet says
Assuming Romney loses in November, Santorum, as the runner-up for the nomination, becomes the default candidate in 2016. Just like Romney, the runner up in ’08, became the default in ’12. That’s pretty much why Santorum’s been running for the past year.

“Santorum in 2016”

He won’t get nearly so far in 2016. Grownups will be running against him.

I’ve been sorry to see all of the kooks drop out… Palin, Bachmann, Perry, et al. The Republican convention would have been more fun if there were half a dozen or so ultra-looney candidates and all of their delegates fighting it out on the convention floor. Now it will be just another one of those ho-hum, made-for-TV events. It is taking place in my back yard (so to speak) but I have no intention of coming within miles of the place.
The Ridger says
I’m very sorry to see him go. I hope Newt means it about staying in to the bitter end. The longer they can keep forcing Mitt to stay with the radical right, the harder it will be for that sanctimonious sociopath to come back right-center.
