We recorded a second ‘episode’ of our podcast experiment this past week, and invited journalist and superstar atheist Jamila Bey to join us for a discussion of the results from a recent Pew Forum survey that shows that religious ‘nones’ represent an all-time high of 20% of the American population.

It went wildly (and hilariously) off the rails with the party crashing of Jamila’s bambino, but we really enjoyed our talk with her.

Xavier was right about you underselling her. Jamila was hilarious. I also found the hypothesis about alternate means of regular interaction undercutting church attendance to be interesting and it’s one explanation which I hadn’t considered before.

“Go to bed or finish watching Scooby.” I’ve heard that quote in my house on more than one occassion.
Forgot to add I love Scooby-Doo for the skeptic ramifications too. There is always a real explanation behind the ghost/troll/phantom. I’ve seen many adaptations of Scooby, both myself and with my kids, and even the horrible ones with Scrappy-Doo have a person behind the curtian. Except for one my MiL got the kids where the supernatural was real (cat people?) and that one went in the goodwill box after the first viewing.
These are funny, keep them coming!
The only objection I’ve heard to the skeptical ideas in Scooby-Doo is that it always ends up being a human agent (Zoinks! It’s Mr. Johnson the caretaker!), instead of how often in real life it turns out to be some sort of natural phenomenon, or our own minds seeing patters or agency where there is none, or when we misinterpret what we see or hear (not a UFO, just the planet Venus).
