Avicenna is on his way out to the protest, to provide medical coverage. He was already getting ready to go when the victim’s death was reported; now he expects riots. Be careful, Avi.
Meanwhile, experts were giving their views in the hours before the victim lost the fight.
“Had the girl simply surrendered (and not resisted) when surrounded by six men, she would not have lost her intestine. Why was she out with her boyfriend at 10 pm?” These comments made by an agricultural scientist at a seminar organised by the police provoked an outrage in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday, and demands for punitive action against her.
Dr Anita Shukla, a scientist at the Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya, had been invited to the seminar on “Women’s Empowerment” in her capacity as the president of Lion’s Club on Wednesday. Women, Shukla said in her speech, had misused the facilities and rights given to them.
Hmmyeah. She should have surrendered, and she shouldn’t have been out at 10 pm. She was doing everything wrong, wasn’t she. She shouldn’t have had a hole between her legs. She shouldn’t have left the house. She shouldn’t have grown up. She shouldn’t have been born. One mistake after another, she made.
Thanks, Dr Shukla. You’re a big help.

Wouldn’t surrendering have made her a slut who probably deserved to be murdered for slutting around?
I’m… fuck. Fuck everything.

What a pharisaical attitude.

Following that wonderful logic to its ultimate conclusion, the Big Bang shouldn’t have banged. Then there wouldn’t any women getting raped, since there wouldn’t be anything. Yeah, it’s clearly the fault of the universe, since it can’t possibly be the fault of the bus full of barbaric thugs that brutally raped (and now murdered) a woman. Let’s blame anything and everything but them. Starting with blaming the dead woman, of course.

And this is an educated woman, a scientist, speaking at a conference on women’s empowerment.
Words fail.

If it had been a legitimate evisceration, the woman’s body has ways of shutting that whole thing down.

President! Of something respectable?
I wouldn’t have her as president of pot-plant watering. “Women had misused the facilities and rights given to them.”
Given to the undeserving obviously. Fancy thinking you could go to the movies at the time the movie you want to see is showing – with a man! Fancy thinking you could get on a bus and go where you needed to go – and not be raped and murdered!
I knew India had bottomed out on the scale of unsafe-for-women among the G20 countries list. Silly me. I’d thought their preferential abortion practices had tipped the scale. Looks like I was wrong. Again. No matter how long I live, it seems there’ll always be something that makes the world an even uglier, worse-than-I-ever-imagined place for women.
Wasabi says
Following these spiteful comments this woman has no right to call herself a scientist and she should resign from her position in the Lions Club. In fact I’m going to write to Lions International to ask them to make her step down, and I encourage others to do the same. Such comments coming from a “so-called” community leader are irresponsible and inappropriate.

OMG DOES THIS WOMAN LIVE UNDER A ROCK. YOU WOULD THINK SHE WAS EDUCATED….BEING AN SCIENTIST…..BUT REALLY SHE MUST HAVE RECEIVED HER DEGREE AT SOME CLOWN COLLEGE. WHAT AN IDIOTIC REMARK AND WHAT A PRIMITIVE WAY OF THINKING!
As I can understand: New Delhi has the highest number of sex crimes among India’s major cities, with a rape reported on average every 18 hours. I highly doubt that this number is merely due to the population size. One of the reasons behind this: I would say is because of people like Dr. Anita Shukla, who supposedly calls herself educated and yet she condones such type of perverted behavior. How can a society be led by people with such little regard for law and order…..I wonder? In order to make a change in the society there should be a clear guidance to what is right and what is wrong. But when you have people with a supposedly higher educational degree who don’t even know what the difference is between right and wrong….how can you expect the uneducated to know?
Hunt says
Yeah, India kind of has a long way to go. I have a feeling academia there gives a new meaning to detached “ivory tower,” where every pronouncement is expected to be received wisdom. Dr. Shukla is about to get a reality check.

Yeah! blame the victim – not like us at all! I’m comforted that the indians (and their sworn enemy) have nuclear weapons. It must mean they are advanced societies……
Marie-Thérèse O'Loughlin says
According to a 2010 survey, more than a third of the women questioned in New Delhi said they had been physically sexually harassed in the previous year, but less than 1 percent reported the assault to the police.

Yeah seems like women can’t win for the rape apologists. If you don’t resist then it’s not really rape and if you do resist then whatever happens was obviously your own fault.

I thought it wasn’t ‘legitimate rape’ unless you fought back? How exactly is a woman supposed to behave to not be blamed?
