Back to Canada!

Tomorrow I’ll be leaving for Kamloops, British Columbia to speak at the Imagine No Religion Conference. It should be a lot of fun! It’s a smaller group than a big national conference, but still has awesome speakers like PZ, Mr. Deity, and Nate Phelps. And some blogger chick who’s going to rant about misogyny in religion, or something like that.

I’m not sure if I have any Canadian tradition I forgot to check out when I spoke in Vancouver. I mean, I ate poutine and learned about Canadian politics – what more is there do to? Though I hear I probably shouldn’t bring up Canadian politics right now, ahem… Hey, at least your conservatives aren’t as bad as ours, right?

Anyway, I apologize that I haven’t been producing as many substantial posts lately. The end of the quarter is approaching, which means things are a little crazy on my end. Have a presentation next week, need to finish my research, then make a presentation for that, then choose a lab that I’ll be in for the next four years… Just a tad bit busy. But fear not, my real posts will return soon!

Have fun Jen! Kamloops is quite arid but not known for very much in particular, other than the two rivers, the nearby lake and having hot summers. BTW, poutine is part of Quebec culture which is very distinct from “west coast” culture. It is of course available in Vancouver, but sushi and East Indian food is much more common and considered to be part of the “local” culture.I have know idea what they eat in Kamloops. I wish I could go!

I am so excited to go! I seriously can’t get over this lineup of speakers. I am 28 years old and have never had a weekend by myself. I have always had a sibling, mother, spouse or child with me. This is the first time that I get a whole weekend to myself. Add to that excitment this amazing conference to attend. Plus the fact that on the Sunday (mother’s day) I am meeting my Dad who I haven’t seen in 16 years!Happy dance! Gonna be a super weekend!

Got to say I was kinda disappointed by this. First of all it’s in Kamloops…. need I say more. Too far from any major city, so you have to pay for a hotel for extra nights unless you want to be up very early or be driving very late. Then the conference is kinda expensive, especially so when you factor in traveling and hotel. Wonder how much cheaper they could have made it with out throwing in a cheap lunch & dinner buffetBut those who do go, Hope you have fun!

Unfortunately, our conservatives wish to be as bad as yours. Also, any plans to speak in Vancouver again? I missed the SFU talk despite both working and studying at SFU at the time because I was snowed in.As far as typical activity, there is at least one typical BC activity, and I’m sure you can easily figure out what it is!

I was disappointed about the Tory majority, but it was fun to see the Bloc get destroyed and the Green Party finally get a seat. Have fun in BC! Come to Ontario next. I’ll get a sitter and come see you.

Our Conservatives are actually just as bad as yours, ideologically speaking. The big difference between our Conservatives and your Conservatives seems to be that ours are too smart to roll out the big ideas like outlawing gay marriage, abortion or gender reassignment surgery. They actually do hold meetings (a fact that came to light due to a wikileaks cable) about how far to push their radical right-wing agenda without alienating centrist voters. They’re terrifying and left-leaning people in this country are really nervous about what they’re going to try to do now that they control a majority of the government.

Yes, you definitely went tot the wrong place to try poutine. Poutine outside Québec is not real poutine.
