I wasn’t expecting this remix

Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University sang an a capella version of the Bed Intruder song at their Christmas show. Wha?

It’s pretty good, though my mind is boggled by a Christmas show at a right-wing evangelical school singing a song by an openly gay man about attempted rape. Especially considering the Dean of Law at Liberty University is also the founder of the Liberty Counsel, which puts out a list of “naughty” stores that say “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas.”

Bed Intruder Song? Totally appropriate for Christmas.

Saying “Happy Holidays?” OMG you’re undermining Christianity by being inclusive!!!!

Got it.

I like the girl wearing the kiffeyeh around her neck. I wonder if she wore it as a sign of solidarity with Arabs in Palestine…or as a fashion statement. Something tells me it’s the latter.

I couldn’t believe the conductor. She had a mohawk as was dressed in a suit at Liberty University? If she’s not gay, she’s got to be doing a “don’t ask, don’t tell” at the school. Freaking funny and pretty crazy. It would only be more weird if Annapolis cadets starting singing “In the Navy”.

What I found interesting was the cross-dressed female conductor…. I did a quick internet search expecting that this wasn’t really Liberty University and that someone just slapped the titles on there for giggles, but it does seem to really be Liberty University. However, I did find this blog post about it: http://joemygod.blogspot.com/2… Hmmm….. Subversive!

It looks like this is part of their we’re-losing- people-at-an-alarming-rate-what-do-we-do-about-that plan. So, someone came up with the idea of doing a pop culture song to attract them youngins and show them that good-ol’ Christian folk know how to have a solid good time! Plus… “If we give Nancy a mohawk we’ll look super cool!”

She’s gay. And so are some of the singers. If the boys there weren’t gay, they’d be playing sports, not singing. *I can stereotype because I’m gay, it’s one of the lesser-known advantages.

No way. Tempting to believe, but read the comments in the Joe My God thread Sunnybook3 posted. Apparently some of those are (possibly openly) gay students daring Ol’ Falwell to roll right out of his grave.Trust me, I went to a conservative christian college (not quite as crazy as Liberty, but damn close enough) and there’s no way the higher ups could conceive of this. I seriously doubt they even know the context of this song. Also, there are so many closeted gays at those schools, most conservative Christians basically turn their gaydar off (in my experience). You’d be surprised what they either don’t notice, or are willing to ignore. I do have a hard time believing that a cross-dressing mohawked lady conductor slipped any higher up’s notice, but seriously, you’d be surprised.

Some friends of mine from high school went to Liberty University. At least one of them is now out and proud. There’s another that was always assumed to be gay who is still a conservative Christian and actually thinks the Creation Museum promotes “God’s truth”. He’s a pastor of some kind now. I think in parts of the South where conservative evangelism, particularly the Souther Baptist Church, dominates social life, gay youths have had a tendency to wrap themselves more strongly in religion than anyone else to keep from being ostracized or worse. There were a lot of kids in the closet in my school, it was safer that way. People start to find who they really are in college, and they come out. Sometimes even at Liberty University.

I went to a very conservative christian school, and I’m pretty sure that we would all have been sent straight to the firey pits of hell for that one… Congrats to liberty :)
