The Secular Student Alliance just put up the video of Greta Christina‘s talk from the SSA conference in Ohio. It’s an hour long, but totally worth it if you have the time. When I was there, it didn’t feel like an hour because it was so captivating. Greta’s an excellent speaker!

Augh! Curse you for posting an hour long video in the middle of the day, when I’m reading from work! =P

On her comments about reaching out towards women and people of color, I think that’s true of a lot of groups. I’ve tried to get into engineering clubs at my university, and the one that does cool projects had mostly white men who don’t share my background (I realize now that my family had less money than most, even though I didn’t notice up to high school). And that makes it tough to connect outside of the one thing connecting us (the club). That’s not to say that I won’t try to get into it, it just made it harder to convince myself to continue to go knowing I wouldn’t have anyone to really talk to.

For a while I was wondering why she didn’t reference the race or women’s rights movements, since it seems we’re fighting the same groups. But then I realized that those groups were dealing with something that couldn’t be hidden. And the LGBT and atheist movements are. You could not tell anyone, and they would never know. They could guess, but it isn’t 100% obvious. So while I think we can learn from the race and women’s rights movement, they didn’t have the issue of coming out, which the LGBT groups do.Just a thought process this video brought out…

Awesome talk, well worth the hour (even for a white male like me)

This is great stuff, as Sindbad said, it relates much to any movement or group. A skeptics group is tentatively forming where I live, so this is something we can really use right now.

!I kind of love this a lot. I’ve been trying to find a good way to articulate “Hey guys, atheism is an identity movement too / let’s fight against religious privilege more explicitly” for a blog post, but Greta’s talk kind of kicks the shit out of anything I’d be able to write. So I lost a blog post, but this is awesome enough to make up for it. Rock on.
