A superbowl ad that manages to combine all of my favorite things!

I’ll admit I’m one of those people who tunes into the Superbowl just to see the hilarious commercials. That’s why I’m saddened to find out that my commercial viewing will be sullied by this nonsense:

Focus on the Family will air a 30-second “life- and family-affirming” television spot, featuring University of Florida star quarterback Tim Tebow and his mother, Pam, during the coverage. …

Tebow and his mother will share one of their many positive personal stories, Schneeberger said, but he wouldn’t reveal which one. One contender is Pam Tebow’s decision to carry her son to term despite a life-threatening pregnancy in the Philippines, where she and her husband, Bob, were serving as Christian missionaries.

Focus on the Family + Tim Tebow + Anti-abortion emotional stories = Jen vomiting all over her new HD TV

But this is the part that really gets me:

“Every cent for this ad was paid for by generous donors who specifically gave for this project because they are excited about this opportunity for Focus to show who we are and what we do,” Schneeberger said.

This is supposed to be a good thing that about $2.5 million was raised for a stupid commercial? If you people really cared about families and life, why don’t you give that money to a better fund? How about food shelters, child clinics, or education? How about supporting all of those unwanted children you’re forcing women to bring into the world? No, instead you need to go on national television guilting women about a difficult but sometimes necessary life choice because Jesus told you to. Yep, you’re really such a moral, ethical group of people.

Well, to be fair, it's these people's rights to make fucktards of themselves.

I hope Tim Tebow gets to the NFL just to get his ass beat by…some guy. Yeah! Take that!

"Declining donations at Focus on the Family have forced the ministry to eliminate more than 275 jobs in recent years."

Yes, the money isn't from the general fund, but it's sad that "fund a super bowl ad" raises the donations instead of "help us employ people so they don't starve" or "freaking help Haiti so people don't die!" doesn't.

They could have gotten at least as much (but probably a lot more) publicity if they'd taken that money and instituted a grant program to help, say, 1000 families who are unemployed with $2500/ea. They could have even limited it to a church giving program and had congregations nominate deserving families. But, I guess it's all about what values.

This reminds me of the gay marriage vote in Maine. Some church group spent about $500,000 on the campaign to make sure ssm didn't get passed. Can't these "righteous" people find more helpful ways to use their money?

Completely random, but this blog got plugged on the Non-Prophets yesterday. Non-Prophets is a broadcast from the guys down at the Atheist Community of Austin, the same guys and gals that do The Atheist Experience.

I thought I'd mention it in case you didn't know.

The absurdity of the pro-life movement became apparent in 2005 during the Terri Schaivo circus. With all the starving people in the world, all those Christians had nothing better to do than stand around with the word "Life" taped over their mouth while keeping vigil over a woman who had been in a coma for 20 years.

There are religious people who really do care about others. And there are lot of people who are just into "photo-op Christianity". They like doing pointless activities that have no other effect than making the participant think they are being productive.

As Twisty Faster comments in her blog, for every fetus "saved" from abortion that grows up to be a million-dollar Christian godbag athlete, there are countless "rapists, suicide bombers, or genocidal manias. Why wouldn’t that be a good idea?" Moreover, it is often hard to tell the difference.

Apparently, there's been a bit of controversy about this ad after some women's advocacy groups protested to CBS. Maybe we'll get a pro baby-killer* counter-ad.

It feels weird to put a link to ESPN here.

    *joke (obviously)
