British fashion designer Alexander McQueen unveiled his new collection inspired by Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species:
“Models with their hair teased into devil-like horns, strutted the catwalk in minidresses decorated with all manner of colourful, elaborate skins. Ruffled hemlines were frilled to resemble feathers, and vibrant fabrics were printed to resemble amphibian-like breastplates.”
Actually I have no idea what any of these costumes have to do with evolution, but I felt compelled to post them since they combined my biology love with my horrible fascination with America’s Next Top Model. Aka, I like sparkly weird costumes. I guess this was a better idea than having all of the models wearing giant beards, or having each outfit gradually change over time. That would be a long, not so interesting fashion show.

One of the best talks at our Darwin Day event last year was from a theatre grad student, who talked about Darwin's influence on literature and theatre in the victorian era. Its not about the science, its about the idea of "exotic races" and "missing links" suddenly becoming part of popular culture. That is more of the vibe that I'm getting from this fashion show. And really, their hair evokes more of an "ears" feeling from me than devil horns.
High fashion, like this, is modern art just like any other. Instead of splashes of paint on a canvas, its just crazy art that you happen to be able to wear. Thats why they use all rail-thin clones as models…they're like a blank canvas with no curves to distract from the clothes. And with all modern art, its important to remember but that its generally not about what they did, its about why they did it.

Glamour magazine recently had a big kerfluffle over a "plus-sized" model. She was actually very popular, and got a lot of great response.
The problem (and hence kerfluffle) was that she wasn't "plus" sized in any way. She was, I think, size 10. That's not large at all. She was just a typical woman. It made me realize, she shouldn't be called a "plus" sized model, it's that the usual models, such as these, should be considered "minus" sized.

Pablo, that is such a good point. I've also heard size 10 (which happens to be what I wear) be considered a plus size model, yet the average size of women in America is somewhere around a 14. I'm skinnier than average and yet I'm considered plump by model standards. Lovely.

Once there was a story of future celebrity gala of some kind, where a reporter is describing women's dresses, which are phenoptypically completed by genetic modification. It goes along these lines: "And xxx has a lovely top with scales and feather tufts that fits like a skin… Oh, wait, it *is* her skin…"

Models aren't real people. They're women who starve themselves, work out insanely, and are born with freakish genes…all so they can APPEAR photoshopped.
I'm sure many people have seen the Ralph Lauren model who was photoshopped into complete freakishness. So, it is pretty obvious what fashion companies want. No idea why, because I rather think if you wear anything under a size 8 you need intravenous feeding, stat. And I really prefer women who have those things nature intended them to have…curves, and a body, and don't look…emaciated. That photoshop scares me.

Unfortunately, the problem is likely that you (and I, fwiw) are not typical. As much as we like to express our indignation about such freaks of nature, the reason the "fashion companies" want them is because they are more effective at selling fashion when using them. Hence, the ultimate driving force is the consumer population, which generally re-inforces the picture, and appears to want to see women like this.

Being a model is so tough. You have to learn every step that you take to maintain your image. I am a model for 5 years already . When i started modeling things are getting to crazy and harder for me but thanks to Vedic Image Group they have shared to me their tip in developing image, Vedic Image is a fashion styling
