Jack and I are having a better day today. It’s still humid, but the temp plummeted overnight and today it’s a reasonable 22 º. We actually went for a real walk around the neighbourhood this morning and just down the street we found a front garden full of milkweed. When I was young I used to love pulling the pods apart and playing with the silk and it was awfully tempting to pluck one today. Instead, I took this photo, but the desire is strong and I cannot guarantee that I won’t pick one later.
A beautiful shade of green and looks like an interesting plant. I’ve never seen milkweed live.
Glad to hear you and Jack are having a better day. Here it’s 25ºC and windy, the ocean’s water is at 24ºC, so it’s a bit strange. The water feels comfortable, but once I’m wet outside I start feeling cold and just want to leave the beach or to get back in the water. I’m not complaining too much, I’m happy the water is so warm and I can swim until I’m tired. :)
So lovely. I don’t think I’ve ever seen milkweed in person, but I think I can understand such a temptation.
It also makes me think of how we tend to see an undifferentiated mess of green when we look around us, but a closer peek reveals so much wonderful intricacy.
I like the pods when they’re half-ripe like this, they have headless little birds nestles inside, very soft. The silk is fun to pull apart, yes. :D And not nearly as annoyingly sticky as cattail fluff, which gets in your eyes then your nose then your mouth and you go home and realize it’s all over your skin and in your hair and you’re never going to have another cattail fight ever, again.
High humidity in temperatures between 15-20 C is enough to make me uncomfortable, as we’ve had lately here in Helsinki. It’s already September, so I’d expect temperatures comfortably around 10-15 C. I feel entitled to seasonally average weather, dammit!
We had just enough rain recently to turn the lawns green. The soil id still fundamentally dry, and some newly grown plants are now drooping in the sun despite high air humidity.
Milkweed is gorgeous aand I’d say that even if Monarchs didn’t eat it.
