Tree chickens!
The “private area” of the mini farm was directly opposite our caravan, and while it was protected with a reed fence, there was a tree that was higher than the fence and the tree had a ramp for the chickens. In the evening some of them enjoyed to walk up the ramp and then hop from branch to branch. I so love that chess board pattern one.

They’re beautiful dinosaurs, a lot more elegant-looking than the usual barnyard runarounds we have.

Growing up right next to a hen house (it was about 1,5 meter from my bedroom window) made me not too fond of these dinosaurs.
Being woken up at 5:30, 5:35, 5:40…. etc. by the incessant crowing of roosters for months on end would require extremely stoical composition to not get cranky. Worst were the days when the weather was sligtly overcast, which confused these dimwitted fucks into crowing almost non-stop the whole day. And when the roosters stopped crowing, the hens started laying eggs and anouncing it to the whole world with screaming bloody murder.
I admit they are tasty though. And pretty, when one shuts-off the association with being constantly sleep-deprived.

I wonder how they discovered that the chickens want to be up a tree? Doesn’t seem like normal chicken thinking.

Wikipedia states that the red junglefowl, which is the wild progenitor of the domestic chicken, roosts on trees and other high, safe places.

Even knowing chickens are descended from jungle fowl, I do find the idea of chickens in trees kind of funny. I don’t know why.
